The Mariinsky online: The Golden Cockerel

On 9 April at the request of audiences who did not have the opportunity to see previous broadcast, the Mariinsky Theatre is repeating its screening of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's opera The Golden Cockerel. The online broadcast will commence on mariinsky.tv, Odnoklassniki and VKontakte at 19.00 Moscow Time. The video will be accessible for twenty-four hours.

This "conte-fable", as Rimsky-Korsakov and the librettist Vladimir Belsky referred to the opus, with its richly-coloured flavour of Pushkin's tale and a dose of sharp satire, was staged at the Mariinsky Theatre by Anna Matison. The stage director addresses her production to a contemporary audience, though she stresses that everyone will find some meaning for themselves in it.

The video recording of The Golden Cockerel was made at its first performances of the production in December 2014. The lead roles were performed by Vladimir Feliauer (Tsar Dodon), Aida Garifullina (the Queen of Shemakha), Andrei Serov (General Polkan), Andrei Ilyushnikov (Tsarevich Gvidon), Vladislav Sulimsky (Tsarevich Afron) and Andrei Popov (the Astrologer). The Mariinsky Orchestra was conducted by Valery Gergiev.

In 2017 this recording was released on the Mariinsky label and brought Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Theatre a Grammy award nomination in the category "Best Opera Recording" of the year.
