The Mariinsky online: The Fountain of Bakhchisarai

On 25 March at 19.00 mariinsky.tv will be launching a new broadcast – a performance of Rostislav Zakharov's choreographic poem The Fountain of Bakhchisarai based on the eponymous work by Alexander Pushkin. The broadcast will be of a recording made in 2017, in which the characters from Pushkin's opus were performed by Anastasia Matvienko (Maria), Viktoria Tereshkina (Zarema), Xander Parish (Vaslav), Roman Belyakov (Ghirei) and Grigory Popov (Nurali). The video will be available to view for twenty-four hours following the start of the online broadcast.

Choreographer Rostislav Zakharov, for whom The Fountain of Bakhchisarai marked his debut in grand ballet, approached work on the production from the point of view of a stage director of drama. The ballet was born not from the dance, but from the plot, the cleverly enacted mise-en-scènes, and centre-stage is taken not by sophisticated technique but by acting skill and expressiveness of a particular "type". The choreographer taught the dancers how to act in their roles, how to show the characters and their conflicts, how to portray a certain image in dance, where each movement becomes a carrier of an emotion and an idea. The staging of the ballet The Fountain of Bakhchisarai in 1934 in Leningrad at the theatre not yet then known as the Kirov was heralded as the glory hour of the genre of drama-ballet.

Please note that a series of recordings of operas, ballets and concerts remains accessible to audiences as part of the Mariinsky Theatre's online programming on YouTube and https://vk.com/mariinskytheatre.
