The Mariinsky online: new broadcasts

The Mariinsky Theatre will be back on-air with its free online broadcasts. At 19.00 on 1 December there will be a screening of the opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan, followed on 4 December at 20.00 by a recent concert featuring the Russisch-Deutsche MusikAkademie conducted by Valery Gergiev. The broadcasts will be available on the platform mariinsky.tv and on the theatre's social networking sites for twenty-four hours.

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's opera based on motifs from Pushkin's tale will be presented using the production directed by Alexander Petrov with the colourful costumes and sets by Vladimir Firer based on original sketches by Ivan Bilibin. The lead roles in the recording made in 2015 feature Irina Churilova (Tsaritsa Militrisa), Mikhail Vekua (Tsarevich Guidon), Edward Tsanga (Tsar Saltan) and Albina Shagimuratova (the Swan Princess).

The programme of broadcasts also includes a concert by the Russisch-Deutsche MusikAkademie that took place on 29 November under the baton of maestro Valery Gergiev. Severin von Eckardstein, a leading German pianist of the present day, performed the solo in van Beethoven's First Piano Concerto. Shostakovich's Ninth Symphony was also performed. The performance commemorated the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II.
