On Tuesday 10 November the winners of Russia's national Golden Mask theatre awards for 2020 are to be announced. Due to the global pandemic, this year the grand ceremony will be adopting an online format. The Mariinsky Theatre is represented in two of the competition's categories: Twyla Tharp's production Push Comes to Shove and the performer of a lead role in this ballet, Philipp Stepin.
The Golden Mask is a professional award for the finest works of the season in all forms of theatre (drama, opera, ballet, modern dance, operetta/musical and puppet theatre). It was founded in 1993 by the Russian Union of Theatre-Workers. This year's competition is to feature premieres that have taken place between 1 August 2018 and 31 July 2019. In compiling their long list of twenty-nine nominee productions, musical theatre experts had to watch three hundred and eighty-six productions from seventy-five towns and cities. Competing in the same category as the Mariinsky Ballet there are productions from Moscow, Perm, Yekaterinburg and Ulan-Ude.
The online broadcast of the ceremony, via the portal Rambler, begins on 10 November at 12.00 Moscow Time and is free to view for all who are interested. From the Mariinsky Theatre, appearing live there will be production participants Philipp Stepin, Elena Yevseyeva, Maria Bulanova and Viktor Kaisheta.
