On Sunday 29 November at the Mariinsky-II there will be a performance of Giuseppe Verdi's opera Il trovatore staged by Pier Luigi Pizzi. The lead roles will be sung by Anna Netrebko, Ekaterina Semenchuk, Yusif Eyvazov and Vladislav Sulimsky. The orchestra is to be conducted by Valery Gergiev.
Regardless of the intense and dramatic narrative of the story, the music of Il trovatore is innately Italian in terms of its ease and simplicity. Stage director Pier Luigi Pizzi has stated that this opera is the perfect example of Verdian melodrama: an engaging plot, perfection of musical form and vivid choral episodes. Here, the protagonists are moved by powerful emotions – love, hatred, jealousy and revenge.
The role of Leonora, one of the most romantic characters in the history of opera, will be sung by Anna Netrebko – as it was at the production premiere at the Mariinsky Theatre in 2013. Ekaterina Semenchuk will be appearing as the perfidious gypsy Azucena, who stokes the rivalry between Manrico (Yusif Eyvazov) and the Conte di Luna (Vladislav Sulimsky) – two brothers who do not know they are related.
The opera Il trovatore has appeared on the playbill of the Mariinsky Theatre with such a cast thanks to the fact that it has been possible to assemble these stellar performers in one place at one time. "For us – all of us at the Mariinsky Theatre – in a surprising way new opportunities have opened up: literally all the outstanding singers, our stars who are known throughout the world, are in St Petersburg right now," commented Valery Gergiev.
Tickets for this event will be name-specific. When purchasing tickets, members of the audience may select any available seats in the auditorium, although the total number of available seats will be strictly limited in accordance with requirements established by the Russian Consumers' Inspectorate.
