New events on the playbill: 27 October – 1 November

The Mariinsky Theatre continues to commemorate the one hundred and sixtieth anniversary of the opening of the historic stage with a series of lively events.

Operas being performed are to include Don Carlo with a stellar cast, Eugene Onegin, Iolanta, and L'elisir d'amore. For the first time following a lengthy absence, Falstaff will be returning to the stage – this will honour Edem Umerov who that evening will be performing the title role. Valery Gergiev will be conducting a concert performance of Les Contes d'Hoffmann.

Balletomanes may look forward to an entire series of star duets: Diana Vishneva and Timur Askerov in Ashton's one-act ballet Marguerite and Armand, Maria Khoreva and Vladimir Shklyarov in Balanchine's Diamonds, two performances of Romeo and Juliet (one with Andrei Yermakov and Oxana Skorik and a second with Kimin Kim and Alina Somova), Le Corsaire with Anastasia Matvienko and Roman Belyakov and Gisellewith Nadezhda Batoeva and Philipp Stepin.

The Concert Hall will be hosting performances of works by Mendelssohn, Bach and Shostakovich by the Stradivarius Ensemble (conductor and soloist – Lorenz Nasturica-Herschowici), performances by the pianists Dmitry Shishkin (with the Mariinsky Orchestra under Stanislav Kochanovsky) and Nikita Abrosimova (recital) and the final concert of International Conservatoire Week featuring mezzo-soprano Olga Borodina with Alexei Vasiliev conducting.
