The Mariinsky online: dedicated to doctors

From 22 to 24 May the Mariinsky Theatre is dedicating a marathon of broadcasts on mariinsky.tv to medical professionals. Through recordings of its finest performances and concerts reflecting the tremendous variety of its repertoire, the theatre is expressing its gratitude to those people who today, in fighting the coronavirus pandemic, are saving the lives of millions of people.

On 22 May at 19.00 there will be a screening of a major concert in honour of the start of the I Moscow International Festival Zaryadye (30 October 2019). The programme includes Dawn over the Moskva River (introduction from the opera Khovanshchina) by Modest Musorgsky, Boléro by Maurice Ravel, Symphonie fantastique by Hector Berlioz and the Fifth Piano Concerto by Camille Saint-Saëns performed by Alexandre Kantorow, recipient of the Grand Prix, 1st prize and Gold Medal at the XVI Tchaikovsky Competition.

On Saturday morning there will be broadcasts for young audiences. On 23 May at 12.00 mariinsky.tv will be broadcasting the interactive concert The Academy of Young Theatre-Goers. To commemorate the birthday of Richard Wagner the theatre is releasing a recording of the programme In the World of Ancient Legends and Traditions, where young audiences can discover scenes from the grandiose tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen in an engaging format. In a recording produced in 2012, famous arias and symphonic highlights are performed by the Mariinsky Orchestra and soloists of the Mariinsky Opera under the baton of Gavriel Heine. The creator and presenter of the concert is Natalia Entelis.

In the evening of 23 May, the Mariinsky Theatre and the Russian Seasons international cultural project will be showing a repeat of the ballet Giselle with a stellar cast of performers. The title role in the ballet, recorded in 2016, is performed by Diana Vishneva, a Mariinsky Theatre prima ballerina and one of the greatest dancers in the world. The role of Count Albrecht is danced by Mathieu Ganio, a star of the Opéra de Paris. Also appearing in the lead roles are Igor Kolb (Hans) and Yekaterina Petrova (Myrtha). The Classical Duet is danced by Renata Shakirova and Filipp Stepin. The conductor is Valery Ovsyanikov.

The weekend will conclude with works by Rodion Shchedrin. At 12.00 on 24 May there will be a repeat screening of the witty and vivid ballet Konyok-Gorbunok (The Little Humpbacked Horse) by Alexei Ratmansky featuring Alina Somova (the Tsar-Maiden), Vladimir Shklyarov (Ivan the Fool) and Vladislav Shumyakov (the Little Humpbacked Horse). The matinee will also include the First Piano Concerto, the solo to be performed by Abisal Gergiev. At 19.00, mariinsky.tv will be broadcasting a recording of the opera The Enchanted Wanderer based on the eponymous tale by Nikolai Leskov for the first time. In this tragic, philosophical and meditative opera by Shchedrin, there are just three soloists and each is entrusted with several roles. The 2010 recording of the production by Alexei Stepanyuk features the premiere cast: Andrei Popov, Sergei Aleksashkin and Kristina Kapustinskaya. Throughout the day, Rodion Shchedrin's music is to be conducted by Valery Gergiev.
