Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra are to open the concert season at the Philharmonie de Luxembourg

Immediately following the close of the XXIV Gergiev Festival in Rotterdam, Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra will open the season at the Philharmonie de Luxembourg before undertaking two concerts at the Philharmonie de Paris.

On 15 September the Mariinsky Orchestra will be appearing under Valery Gergiev at one of the most prestigious concert halls in Europe – the Philharmonie de Luxembourg. The St Petersburg musicians' concert will be the opening performance for the venue's 2019-20 season. The programme includes Claude Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, the suite from Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's opera The Golden Cockerel and Dmitry Shostakovich's Fourth Symphony.

Valery Gergiev will then conduct several concerts with the Münchner Philharmoniker in Austria and Germany, while on 21 and 22 September he will appear with the Mariinsky Orchestra in France. At the Philharmonie de Paris, Mariinsky Opera soloists, the Chorus and Orchestra will present Pyotr Tchaikovsky's opera Iolanta (21 September) and Richard Wagner's triumphant mystery-opera Parsifal (22 September). On the first evening the stage will be taken by Irina Churilova (Iolanta), Najmiddin Mavlyanov (Count Vaudémont), Alexei Markov (Robert), Stanislav Trofimov (René, King of Provence) and Yevgeny Nikitin (Ibn-Hakia). The vocals in Parsifal will be performed by Mikhail Vekua (Parsifal), Yulia Matochkina (Kundry), Yuri Vorobiev (Gurnemanz), Yevgeny Nikitin (Klingsor), Alexei Markov (Amfortas) and Gleb Перязев (Titurel). Valery Gergiev will be conducting. In 2018 the Mariinsky Theatre and Valery Gergiev presented Richard Wagner's tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen in concert at the Philharmonie de Paris. Those performances received great acclaim from the public and critics.
