Guest Ensembles From China and the Baltic Сountries to Perform at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre

The Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre will host guest ensembles – the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra, the Baltic Sea Philharmonic, and the Harbin Symphony Orchestra – on 16 March, 19 March, and 27 March.

On 16 March, the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra will make its debut at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre. The orchestra will perform under the baton of Alexander Vikulov with featured soloist Vytautas Sondeckis (cello). The concert of the ensemble is dedicated to the memory of the famed Lithuanian conductor, violinist and teacher Saulius Sondeckis, People’s Artist of the USSR. The programme includes Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik, Felix Mendelssohn’s String Symphony No. 7, Robert Volkmann’s Serenade No. 3 for Cello and String Orchestra, Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Andante cantabile, and Dmitry Shostakovich and Rudolf Barshai’s Chamber Symphony. Founded in 1992, the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra is one of the youngest and most memorable professional chamber ensembles of Lithuania. The ensemble has appeared at major festivals and various venues in Lithuania, they have toured in Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Italy, Switzerland, and other countries. The orchestra is actively involved in music and educational activities and organizes educational concerts and theatrical productions for young audiences at its home stage – the Klaipėda Concert Hall. The ensemble’s broad repertoire includes Baroque and classical music, as well as works by the 20th century composers and modern Lithuanian composers.

On 19 March, the Baltic Sea Philharmonic under the baton of Kristjan Järvi will present the programme Nordic Pulse at the Concert Hall. St Petersburg is the final stop of the ensemble’s tour during which they have already performed in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Finland. In 2018, the orchestra toured in Switzerland, Germany, Italy, and Poland as part on the orchestra’s 10-year anniversary celebrations. The programme includes Mick Pedaja’s Forest Cry / Follow, Pēteris Vasks’ Vientuļais Eņģelis (Lonely Angel) , Gediminas Gelgotas’ Violin Concerto, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Dance of the Tumblers from The Snow Maiden, Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s concert suite from The Sleeping Beauty in Kristjan Järvi’s version, as well as Järvi’s Aurora. Featured soloists: David Nebel (violin), Mick Pedaja (vocals). The Baltic Sea Philharmonic was founded on the basis of the Baltic Sea Youth Philharmonic and gained recognition due to its non-trivial approach to sound. The ensemble holds annual auditions for young artists and currently includes musicians from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Sweden, and Russia. The orchestra has taken part in famous festivals, such as the Baltic Sea Festival in Stockholm, the Beethovenfest in Bonn, and the Rheingau Musik Festival. In 2015, the orchestra was awarded the European Cultural Prize for its exceptional achievements in developing creativity and innovation, and influencing the cultural scene across the Baltic Sea region.

As part of the Trans-Siberian Art Festival, the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre will host a performance of the Harbin Symphony Orchestra on 27 March. The concert will see the Russian premiere of The Dream of the Red Chamber Piano Concerto, composed by pianist Claudia Yang in collaboration with Hungarian composer Gyula Fekete. The programme also includes Antonio Vivaldi’s Concerto for Two Violins and Cello and Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 ( From the New World). Featured soloists: Claudia Yang (piano), Susan Tang (violin), Albina Khaibullina (violin). The performance will be conducted by Muhai Tang. Officially, the Harbin Symphony Orchestra was founded in April of 1908, when the Orchestra of the Russian Trans-Amur Railway Corps Brigade Second Battalion performed Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture in Harbin. Then the ensemble was renamed and the number of its musicians greatly increased. Later on, the Harbin Symphony Orchestra was formed on the basis of the ensemble. In 2009, the orchestra, as part of the city government delegation, gave a number of concerts in Europe, including at the Musikhuset Aarhus, the Musikverein Wien, the National Opera of Greece in Athens, and performed on tour in Russia and Japan. In 2016, the Harbin Symphony Orchestra performed together with the Ural Academic Philharmonic Orchestra at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. The Harbin Symphony and Chamber Orchestras have been based at the Harbin Concert Hall since 2011.
