In memory of Mariss Jansons

Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Theatre will be dedicating their performance of the opera La fanciulla del West on 3 December to the memory of Mariss Jansons – an outstanding conductor and one of the most influential musicians of his generation.

Despite the fact that it was outside Russia that Mariss Jansons won true acclaim, working with the world’s greatest orchestras – the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Wiener Philharmoniker, the Berliner Philharmoniker, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks – his destiny was always closely linked with St Petersburg. The maestro graduated from the Leningrad Conservatory, at which he was later to teach, for several years he was an assistant to Yevgeny Mravinsky at the Leningrad Philharmonic, subsequently collaborating with that orchestra for many years, and he brought many illustrious ensembles to St Petersburg, always referring to himself as a resident of the city.

Today, continuing the musical dynasty, his daughter Ilona and granddaughter Anastasia both work at the Mariinsky Theatre. It was Ilona Jansons – a Mariinsky Theatre pianist – who undertook the musical preparation of the premiere of the opera La fanciulla del West with soloists in May 2019.

On 3 December the memorial performance will feature Amalia Gogeshvili (Minnie), Akhmed Agadi (Dick Johnson), Vadim Kravets (Jack Rance), Yevgeny Akhmedov (Nick), Grigory Karasev (Ashby), Edem Umerov (Sonora) and Gleb Peryazev (Jake Wallace). Christian Knapp will be conducting.

Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Theatre would like to express their deep sympathy to Mariss Jansons’ friends and family.
