Rising stars at the International Piano Festival

From 21 to 31 December the traditional International Piano Festival of the Mariinsky Theatre will see appearances not just by acclaimed maestri and the younger generation of pianists whose names have already become well established but also rising stars. Among them are prize-winners of the Grand Piano Competition Alexandra Dovgan and Eva Gevorgyan, who – despite their young ages – are already being spoken of as serious musicians. On 23 and 24 December the pianists may be heard in solos and in ensemble with orchestra under Valery Gergiev.

Aged fifteen, Eva Gevorgyan is frequently seen as a concert pianist, composer and true marathon competitor. She has succeeded in winning awards at forty competitions for children and young people. Her recent victory at the Cleveland International Piano Competition for Young Artists, 2nd prize and the special Press Award at the Cliburn Junior Competition in Dallas and the prestigious ICMA Discovery Award have made the musician stand apart on the international scene. At the festival at the Mariinsky Theatre Eva Gevorgyan and the orchestra under Valery Gergiev will be performing Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini – a work which she dazzlingly performed in the final of the Cliburn Competition. The solo performance of the pianist, “who tries not just to play the notes, but also to reveal nuances of the score”, will allow the audience to discover her interpretations of works by Chopin and Liszt.

The name of twelve-year-old Alexandra Dovgan is well known to audiences of the Mariinsky Theatre for her participation in its festivals. The pianist invariably wins hearts with the youthful freshness and, at the same time, the perfect technique of her performance. The legendary Grigory Sokolov, who this summer introduced Alexandra at the Salzburg Festival, speaks of her as of a harmonious talent with a great future. Today Alexandra Dovgan is actively developing her international career and delighting at venues throughout Europe: the Berliner Philharmonie, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. Together with the Mariinsky Orchestra she will perform van Beethoven’s Second Piano Concerto, while her recital programme includes his sonatas and works by Schubert, Chopin and Rachmaninoff.
