The Mariinsky Ballet is setting out on a tour of China

Less than a month after returning from a major tour of the USA, the Mariinsky Ballet is setting out to undertake another tour. The dancers will be appearing in Beijing and Nanjing, where they will join a tour by the Mariinsky Orchestra, Opera and Chorus under Valery Gergiev.

From 28 November to 6 December the ballet company will be presenting eight performances at major stage venues in China: at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing and the Centre for the Performing Arts in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. Each city will see three performances of one of the world’s favourite ballets – Alexander Gorsky’s Don Quixote, as well as one evening of ballets by Michel Fokine. That programme includes The Firebird, Chopiniana and Schéhérazade.

Participating in the tour are leading soloists of the company who are well-known to Chinese audiences, as well as others for whom this will be their first visit to China. The roles of Kitri and Basilio are to be performed by Renata Shakirova with Timur Askerov and Elena Yevseyeva with Alexei Timofeyev. The one-act ballets will feature Yekaterina Osmolkina, Maria Shirinkina, Tatiana Tkachenko, Maria Iliushkina, Danila Korsuntsev, Alexander Romanchikov and Maxim Zyuzin. The tour will also mark some debuts: Anastasia Nuikina will be appearing for the first time as the Firebird in the eponymous ballet, while Maria Bulanova, who a few days ago was promoted to the rank of second soloist, will dance the role of Zobeide in Schéhérazade.

The tour by the Mariinsky Theatre of the Asia-Pacific region will run from 20 November to 11 December. Over three weeks the performers will appear at ten major venues in the People’s Republic of China, Japan and South Korea. Prior to returning to St Petersburg, on 11 December the orchestra and Valery Gergiev will give two concerts at the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre (Vladivostok).
