The China National Opera and Dance Drama Theater is to appear at the Mariinsky Theatre

On 3 and 4 December the historic stage of the Mariinsky Theatre will host a production of Confucius by the China National Opera and Dance Drama Theater. The tour by the ensemble marks seventy years since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China.

The production by one of the People’s Republic of China’s most important State theatres will introduce audiences to the culture of China and will present a unique genre of dance drama, which blends together Chinese choreography, the performers’ expressiveness, various tricks and colourful crowd scenes. The production of Confucius is a story of the life path of ancient China’s thinker and philosopher which transports the audience to a time when Confucius travelled the world, spreading his learning.

The China National Opera and Dance Drama Theater was founded in 1951. It comprises an opera company, a dance drama company, an ensemble of folk music, a symphony orchestra and a creative studio. In the course of half a century, the theatre has mounted over a hundred operas and dance dramas, many of which have become symbols of Chinese theatre art, while the company has won acclaim not just at home but throughout the world.
