Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Theatre are to undertake a tour of the Asia-Pacific Region

Following the premiere of Vladimir Varnava’s ballet Daphnis et Chloé, which took place on 16 November at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre, Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra will be setting out on a tour. The first two performances will take place in Europe – in Germany and in Luxembourg, while from 20 November the Mariinsky Theatre will undertake a major tour of countries in the Asia-Pacific Region. The tour will start with a performance by the Mariinsky Orchestra and Valery Gergiev, who will then be joined by the Mariinsky Opera and Chorus, then by the ballet company in late November. Over the course of three weeks the artistes will appear at ten major venues in the People’s Republic of China, Japan and Korea. Before returning to St Petersburg, on 11 December the orchestra and Valery Gergiev will perform two concerts at the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre (Vladivostok).

During the tour the company will present classical works from its repertoire – at the Konzerthaus in Dortmund and the Philharmonie de Luxembourg the programme will feature works by Rachmaninoff, the Shanghai Oriental Art Center will host symphonies by Tchaikovsky, the Nanjing Performing Arts Center in Jiangsu Province will see Ravel’s Boléro and symphonies by Shostakovich, concert halls in Sakai and Fukuoka in Japan will host Shchedrin’s Naughty Limericks, and the Xinghai Concert Hall in Guangzhou and the Lotte Hall in Seoul will see Musorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.

For the first time, the theatre will be presenting Wagner’s majestic stage mystery Parsifal in China, directed by Tony Palmer. The production, which was revived last season, will be seen by audiences at the Nanjing Performing Arts Center in Jiangsu Province. Parsifal will also be performed in concert at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (Beijing).

Particular attention during the tour will be focussed on composers honoured by the Mariinsky Theatre in 2019 – Rimsky-Korsakov and Berlioz, while on the eve of 2020 the theatre will mark Tchaikovsky’s anniversary at concert venues in Tokyo with a marathon of his works. From 30 November to 7 December Suntory Hall and the Bunka Kaikan will host performances of all of the composer’s symphonies, his violin concerto and a range of concerti for piano, the operas Mazepa (in concert) and The Queen of Spades (production by Alexei Stepanyuk).

Instrumentalists who will be performing with Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra during the tour include both acclaimed and young musicians. The Konzerthaus in Dortmund and Tokyo’s Bunka Kaikan will see the pianist Sergei Babayan performing with the orchestra, while the Lotte Hall in Seoul and the Daegu Concert Hall will host the violinist Clara-Jumi Kang. The Tchaikovsky marathon will feature the acclaimed pianists Nobuyuki Tsujii and Sergei Babayan, the violinist Ryo Goto and the cellist Alexander Buzlov. The operas and concerts will feature stars of the Mariinsky Theatre, among them Maria Bayankina, Irina Churilova, Yulia Matochkina, Mikhail Vekua, Vladimir Galouzine, Roman Burdenko, Vladislav Sulimsky, Yuri Vorobiev, Mikhail Petrenko and Stanislav Trofimov to name but a few.

The tour of the Asia-Pacific Region will run from 20 November to 11 December. From 28 November the tour will be joined by the Mariinsky Ballet. The dancers are awaited in Beijing and Nanjing, where there will be performances of ballets by Michel Fokine and Alexander Gorsky’s Don Quixote.
