A tour of Europe by Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra

From 7 to 15 October Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra will undertake a series of performances in Great Britain, Switzerland, Germany, Slovakia and Belgium.

On 7 and 8 October Valery Gergiev will present prize-winners of the XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition at London’s Cadogan Hall. On the first evening, the Mariinsky Orchestra will be accompanied by Matvey Demin (flute), recipient of the 1st prize and Gold Medal at the XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition, who will be performing the solo in Jacques Ibert’s flute concerto and the Fantasie brillante on a theme from Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen arranged by François Borne. The programme also includes highlights from Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera-ballet Mlada and Hector Berlioz’ Symphonie fantastique. On 8 October the concert will feature Mao Fujita, recipient of the 2nd prize at the XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition. Together with the Mariinsky Orchestra he will perform Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto. There will also be a performance of the suite from Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevronia and highlights from Hector Berlioz’ Roméo et Juliette.

On 9 October Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra will appear at the Bratislava Music Festival. The concert programme includes works by Russian composers – Rodion Shchedrin’s First Piano Concerto Naughty Limericks, Symphony No 6 and highlights from the ballet Cinderella by Sergei Prokofiev.

On 11 and 12 October the Mariinsky Orchestra will perform two concerts in Switzerland. The soloist on both evenings will be Alexandre Kantorow (piano), recipient of the Grand Prix, 1st prize and Gold Medal at the XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition. On 11 October at the concert hall of the acclaimed Swiss residential school Institut Le Rosey in Rolle there will be a performance of Rodion Shchedrin’s Symphonic Diptych, Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No 2 and Modest Musorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. On 12 October at the Musical Theater Basel there will be a repeat performance of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Second Piano Concerto, Rodion Shchedrin’s First Piano Concerto Naughty Limericks and Hector Berlioz’ Symphonie fantastique.

The next day the Mariinsky Orchestra will appear at Frankfurt’s Alte Oper under the baton of Valery Gergiev. The programme will include Rodion Shchedrin’s Symphonic Diptych, Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony and Piano Concerto No 2 by Sergei Rachmaninoff. The soloist is Behzod Abduraimov. The concert forms part of the international cultural project Russian Seasons, which in 2019 will be held in Germany.

On 15 October, at the end of the tour, the musicians will appear at the Queen Elisabeth Concert Hall in Antwerp. Works to be performed include Modest Musorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, the suite from Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan and Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Second Piano Concerto, the solo again to be performed by Alexandre Kantorow, winner of the XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition.
