The Mariinsky Ballet to undertake a major tour of the USA

From 5 October to 3 November the Mariinsky Ballet will undertake one of its most important tours of the season in the USA. The performances will take place at the New York City Center, the Kennedy Center (Washington), the Segerstrom Center for the Arts (Costa Mesa), the Los Angeles Music Center and the Zellerbach Hall in Berkeley.

On 5 and 6 October the tour will open with two performances of Alexander Sergeyev's one-act ballet At the Wrong Time at the festival Fall for Dance, to run from 1 to 13 October at the New York City Center. The lead roles are to be performed by Nadezhda Batoeva, Anastasia Nuikina, Maria Shirinkina, Xander Parish, Konstantin Zverev and Alexei Timofeyev. The piano role will be performed by Vladimir Rumyantsev. The ballet At the Wrong Time to music by Heitor Villa-Lobos marks the choreographic debut of Mariinsky Theatre soloist Alexander Sergeyev, first presented as part of the project Creative Workshop of Young Choreographers in 2019.

From 8 to 13 October there will be the traditional annual tour by the Mariinsky Ballet to Washington at the Kennedy Center. The programme of the eighteenth visit by dancers from St Petersburg to this illustrious stage includes the US premiere of the ballet Paquita by Édouard Deldevez, Ludwig Minkis and Riccardo Drigo with choreography by Yuri Smekalov; reconstruction and staging of the choreography of Marius Petipa (Grand Pas from Act III) by Yuri Burlaka. Over six days audiences will be treated to seven performances, where dancers of the acclaimed company will be accompanied by young performers in the lead roles – Viktoria Tereshkina, Nadezhda Batoeva, Maria Khoreva, Renata Shakirova, Anastasia Lukina, May Nagahisa, Yana Selina, Yekaterina Chebykina, Maria Shirinkina, Maria Bulanova, Timur Askerov, Xander Parish and Konstantin Zverev. "It is wonderful that the Kennedy Center will receive many young artists, among them young soloists who joined the company last year after graduating from the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet", remarked Yuri Fateyev, Acting Director of the Mariinsky Ballet. The tour performances of the Mariinsky Ballet will be accompanied by the orchestra of the Kennedy Center Opera House under Gavriel Heine.

The ballet company will then depart for Costa Mesa, where the tour will be joined by the Mariinsky Orchestra. From 16 to 20 October Mariinsky Ballet will present six performances of Ludwig Minkus' ballet La Bayadère choreographed by Marius Petipa (1877), revised version by Vladimir Pomnomarev and Vakhtang Chabukiani (1941), with individual dances staged by Konstantin Sergeyev and Nikolai Zubkovsky. The lead roles will be performed by principal dancers of the ballet company Yekaterina Kondaurova, Alina Somova, Karia Khoreva, Nadezhda Batoeva, Timur Askerov, Andrei Yermakov, Kimin Kim and Vladimir Shklyarov. Gavriel Heine will be conducting.

After the performances in Costa Mesa, the Mariinsky Ballet and Orchestra will appear in Los Angeles at the Music Center (24 – 27 October). The programme includes George Balanchine's famous ballet Jewels, staged in 1967 for America's New York City Ballet. Again, the lead roles will be performed by soloists and the young generation of Mariinsky Ballet dancers. Alexei Repnikov will be conducting.

The Mariinsky Ballet's tour of the USA will conclude with a further series of performances of the ballet La Bayadère at the Zellerbach Hall in Berkeley (30 October – 3 November). The role of Nikia will again be performed by Yekaterina Kondaurova and Maria Khoreva as well as Olesya Novikova, the role of Solor to be danced by Andrei Yermakov, Kimin Kim and VladimirShklyarov and that of Gamzatti by Nadezhda Batoeva, Anastasia Nuikina and Yekaterina Chebykina. Alexei Repnikov will be conducting.
