The XIII Mariinsky International Piano Festival will run at the theatre from 13 December to 31 December. Valery Gergiev is to conduct five concerts featuring brilliant pianists representing different generations at the festival.

The opening of the XIII Mariinsky International Piano Festival will be held at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre on 22 December (16.00). Famous pianist and teacher Sergei Babayan will perform at the opening concert with the Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev. He will play Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.  25. That same evening, the Mariinsky II will also help open the festival with a concert of Denis Matsuev, People’s Artist of Russia. The pianist will perform George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, which he marvelously performed with the Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev at the Stars of the White Nights festival in 2017, as well as at the Washington National Cathedral during the St Petersburg’s ensemble tour in the United States. Denis Matsuev gave the following description of the work: “I, Andrei Ivanov and Alexander Zinger (both are great jazz musicians, with whom we make our own programme) made up a story inside the rhapsody: our own improvisations, our cadenzas. We showed this programme in some 20 countries around the world and many cities of Russia. ” The programme also includes Felix Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1 performed by the 11-year-old pianist Alexandra Dovgan, who is a prize-winner at the Vladimir Krainev Moscow International Piano Competition and the 2018 International Grand Piano Competition. Alexander Zinger (percussion) and Andrei Ivanov (double bass) will take part in the concert. The Mariinsky Orchestra will be conducted by Valery Gergiev.

The Mariinsky II will host a performance of Pavel Gililov, a famous pianist and teacher, with the Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev on 28 December (20.00). Gililov is a vivid representative of the St Petersburg piano school and Artistic Director of the Telekom Beethoven Competition in Bonn. He will perform Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3. Pavel Gililov has performed with many famous ensembles at major venues in Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Spain, Argentina and other countries over the years. Today, the pianist teaches at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln and at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. He also travels the world giving master-classes, including at the Summer Academy in Lausanne.

The Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre will host a performance of virtuoso pianist Alexei Volodin, who will play Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto No. 1, on 30 December (15.00). Volodin is acclaimed for his highly sensitive touch and technical brilliance. The programme includes excerpts from Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tale of Tsar Saltan and Claude Debussy’s Le Martyre de saint Sébastien featuring the Mariinsky Chorus. Valery Gergiev will conduct the Mariinsky Orchestra.

The closing concert of the XIII Mariinsky International Piano Festival will be held under the baton of Valery Gergiev on 31 December (15.00, the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre).
