The Mariinsky Theatre to Perform Giuseppe Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra at the Teatro Amintore Galli (Rimini)

Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Theatre ensemble will perform Giuseppe Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra staged by Andrea De Rosa at the Teatro Amintore Galli (Rimini) on 10 December and 11 December.

Leading soloists of the Mariinsky Opera and guest singers will take part in the on-tour performances. Lead roles in the December 10 performance will be sung by Vladislav Sulimsky (Simon Boccanegra), Tatiana Serjan (Maria Boccanegra), Mikhail Petrenko (Jacopo Fiesco), Otar Jorjikia (Gabriele Adorno), Roman Burdenko (Paolo Albiani), and Gleb Peryazev (Pietro). Lead roles in the December 11 performance will be sung by Roman Burdenko (Simon Boccanegra), Irina Churilova (Maria Boccanegra), Stanislav Trofimov (Jacopo Fiesco), Najmiddin Mavlyanov (Gabriele Adorno), Efim Zavalny (Paolo Albiani), and Gleb Peryazev (Pietro). Valery Gergiev will conduct the Mariinsky Orchestra for both soirée performances.

Giuseppe Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in 2016 and marked one of the highlights of the 2015/16 season. Stage director Andrea De Rosa decided to use the stage in the way which allows the audience to focus on interactions between characters and their feelings. The required ambiance is created by video projections made for the production on the basis of real landscapes of Genoa sea shores, where the opera is set (Lighting and Video Designer: Pasquale Mari). This is a co-production by La Fenice Opera House and the Carlo Felice Theater of Genoa.

The Mariinsky Theatre’s on-tour performances are one of the last events of the international cultural project Russian Seasons, which travelled to Italy in 2018. Moreover, the performances will also grace the festive playbill of the Teatro Amintore Galli, which reopens its doors after an extensive reconstruction. The building was massively damaged during World War II and was then used as a gym for more than 50 years. And now, 75 years later, the theatre was restored according to architect Luigi Poletti’s plans. Poletti designed the original building back in 1857.
