The UK Royal Ballet’s Prima Ballerina to Perform at the Mariinsky Theatre

On 10 November and 11 November, the historic stage of the Mariinsky Theatre will host a series of performances of Frederick Ashton’s Sylvia to the music of Léo Delibes. The airy, impetuous, light, and ironic piece is based on the pastoral Aminta by Torquato Tasso, an Italian poet of the Renaissance epoch. The story, which follows the traditions of Greek mythology, is translated by the choreographer into a series of dazzling ensembles. They are both precise and watercolour-like and weightless at the same time.

On 10 November (19.30), the title role will be interpreted by Lauren Cuthbertson, a Principal of the Royal Ballet (United Kingdom). Her on-stage partners include Xander Parish (Aminta) and Andrei Yermakov (Orion). The following day, the matinée performance will feature Nadezhda Batoeva, Philipp Stepin, and Roman Belyakov (13.00) in the lead roles. The soirée performance will feature Viktoria Tereshkina, Kimin Kim, and Konstantin Zverev (19.00).

Lauren Cuthbertson graduated from the Royal Ballet School. In 2002, she joined the Royal Ballet Company. Cuthbertson was promoted to Principal in 2008. Cuthbertson’s repertoire with the Company includes leading roles in the classical ballets, Romeo and Juliet (Juliet), Manon (Manon), Mayerling (Baroness Mary Vetsera), Anastasia (Anna Anderson) by Kenneth MacMillan, and leading roles in Sylvia (Sylvia), Marguerite and Armand (Marguerite) by Frederick Ashton, as well as roles in works by George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Glen Tetley, David Bintley, and Wayne McGregor.
