Teodor Currentzis, Fabio Mastrangelo, and Anton Sharoev to Present Their Ensembles at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre

The Concert Hall will host performances by famous Russian music ensembles in November. The ensembles include the Siberian Camerata Orchestra under the baton of Anton Sharoev, the Symphonica ARTica Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Fabio Mastrangelo, and the Orchestra MusicAeterna under the baton of Teodor Currentzis.

On 17 November, the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre hosts a performance of Anton Rubinstein’s Christus for the first time. The performance features the Siberian Camerata Orchestra and the Tyumen Philharmonic’s Choral Capella, organist Maria Blazhevich, and vocalists Alexander Gaynutdinov, Irina Bibeeva, Elvira Sanievskaya, Elena Sharoeva, Anton Zavyalov, and Aleksander Tsinko. The performance will be conducted by Anton Sharoev. The opera Christus is the last work of Anton Rubinstein. Its German-language libretto is based on the eponymous poem by Heinrich Bulthaupt. The opera was performed only once in Rubinstein's lifetime – in its concert version – in Stuttgart in 1894. A year later, after Anton Rubenstein’s death, the opera was first performed on stage. The score was then lost. It was considered to be irretrievably lost for more than a hundred years; only the clavier part of the score was preserved and stored at the library of the St Petersburg Conservatoire. However, Anton Sharoev came across the musical notations in one of the archives of the Berlin Library in 2007. In 2008, the Perm Tchaikovsky Opera and Ballet Theatre hosted the premiere of Christus staged by Georgy Isaakyan. Several years later, Anton Sharoev’s concert version of the work was performed in Tyumen, St Petersburg, Moscow, and Berlin.

On 20 November, the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre hosts a performance by another famous ensemble from Siberia – the Symphonica ARTica Symphony Orchestra of the State Krivoshapko Philharmonic of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). Led by their principal conductor – Fabio Mastrangelo – the musicians will perform Hector Berlioz’ Symphonie fantastique, Kirill Gerasimov’s Oyuun (Shaman), and Peteris Vasks’ violin concerto Distant Light with featured soloist Alexei Lundin. The Symphonica ARTica Symphony Orchestra was founded in 2012. In the five years since its foundation, the orchestra has taken part in several international projects and has performed on tour at Russia’s major concert venues. The Symphonica ARTica Symphony Orchestra gave two performances as part of the Moscow Easter Festival (in 2014 and 2015).

On 25 November, as part of their European tour, the Orchestra MusicAeterna is scheduled to perform at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre under the baton of its founder and artistic director Teodor Currentzis. The renowned ensemble and soloists Paula Murrihy (contralto), Jeanine De Bique (soprano), and Florian Boesch (baritone) will perform Symphony No. 4 and Des Knaben Wunderhorn by Gustav Mahler. The orchestra will appear in Moscow before the St Petersburg performance and will go on to perform in Madrid, Milan, Munich, Budapest, and Berlin. Teodor Currentzis said in one of his interviews: “Mahler is one of the most detailed composers out there. My task is not to guide the orchestra superficially: go louder, quieter, faster or slower. I want every single minor detail to create an image in the minds of the musicians themselves, which would in turn help the musicians find the necessary tempo and dynamics.” Founded in 2004, the Orchestra MusicAeterna is now one of the most sought-after orchestras when it comes to authentic performance. The geographical scope of their concerts spans Vienna, Amsterdam, London, Baden-Baden, Madrid, Athens, Berlin, Munich, Mannheim, Dortmund, Lisbon, Paris, Helsinki, Brussels, Salzburg, Moscow, and St Petersburg. The ensemble’s recordings, released in collaboration with Sony Classical, receive prestigious awards and honours almost every year.
