The Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Japanese, Austrian, Italian and Australian conductors

In November, the Mariinsky Orchestra is scheduled to give a series of concerts under the baton of Japanese, Austrian, Italian and Australian conductors.

On 1 November, the Mariinsky Orchestra will perform under the baton of Japanese conductor Shizuo Z Kawahara. The programme includes Johann Sebastian Bach’s/Edward Elgar’s Fantasia and Fugue in C minor, Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 2, and Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations (the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre, 20.00). Shizuo Z Kawahara, who won the 1st prize at the Georg Solti International Conductors’ Competition in Frankfurt, trained as conductor at the Yale University and received his Bachelor’s Degree at the Eastman School of Music. Kawahara has studied under David Effron and Lawrence Leighton Smith, perfected his craft under Leonard Slatkin and David Zinman, and trained as an apprentice to Christoph Eschenbach at the Philadelphia Orchestra. The conductor has performed with many famous ensembles, including the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern, the Nice Philharmonic, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Seattle Symphony, and the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra. In January 2018, Shizuo Z Kawahara made his debut at the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre (Vladivostok) and has since actively collaborated with the ensemble.

The 9 November (19.00) performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the historic stage of the Mariinsky Theatre will be conducted by Sascha Goetzel. Vadim Kravets (Don Giovanni), Gennady Bezzubenkov (Commendatore), Anastasia Kalagina (Donna Anna), Yevgeny Akhmedov (Don Ottavio), Anzhelika Minasova (Donna Elvira), Lyudmila Dudinova (Zerlina), and Yuri Vorobiev (Masetto) will appear in the lead roles. Born in Vienna, Sascha Goetzel started his music career by collaborating with many renowned conductors. Zubin Mehta described him as "highly talented, musically and technically," while Riccardo Muti said he was "an enthusiastic, extraordinarily talented musician." Sascha Goetzel is currently the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra (BIPO). Among the highlights of Goetzel’s career are performances with such famed ensembles as the NHK Symphony Orchestra, the Wiener Kammerorchester, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra, and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester. Sascha Goetzel is also a very sought-after opera conductor. He was at the helm of productions at the Wiener Staatsoper and the Volksoper Wien, the Salzburger Landestheater, the Angers-Nantes Opéra and other venues.

On 13 November, the Mariinsky Orchestra will once again perform under the baton of Vladimir Fanshil, a graduate of the St Petersburg State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire (the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre, 19.00). The programme includes Two Slavonic Dances and Symphony No. 8 by Antonín Dvořák and Symphony No. 8 by Ludwig van Beethoven. For the last three years, Vladimir Fanshil was an assistant to Iván Fischer, conductor of the Konzarthaus Orchestra Berlin and the Budapest Festival Orchestra; he also toured with the Budapest Festival Orchestra and took part in the orchestra’s recording of Gustav Mahler’s symphonies.

On 15 November, the Mariinsky Orchestra will perform under the baton of famed Italian conductor Daniele Gatti. The programme includes ballet music from Igor Stravinsky’s Apollon musagète, Claude Debussy’s Nocturnes, and suite No. 2 from Maurice Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé (the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre, 19.00). Daniele Gatti was educated at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Milan. At different times, he has been at the helm of such orchestras as the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London, the Orchestre national de France, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He was also the Principal Conductor of the Royal Opera House (London), the Opernhaus Zürich, and the Teatro Comunale di Bologna. Daniele Gatti’s engagements for the 2018/2019 season include a production of Giuseppe Verdi’s Rigoletto, which opens the new season at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, performances with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, and the Symphonie-Orchester Des Bayerischen Rundfunks.
