Close of the II International Caucasus Festival The Mariinsky – Vladikavkaz

On 7 October, two performances of Rustam Sagdiev’s opera The Adventures of Kintaro will close the II International Caucasus Festival The Mariinsky – Vladikavkaz, which has run from 30 September at the Mariinsky Theatre's branch in the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania. During the festival, the National State Opera and Ballet Theatre and the Concert Hall (the State Academic Philharmonic of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania) have hosted 15 events, including performances of opera and choral masterpieces, the latest premieres of the branch, and ballet gala concerts. On 1 October, the Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev have a charity concert for the benefit of students of music and art schools of the city and the region as a whole.

The festival opened on 30 September at the Concert Hall. The programme included excerpts from Igor Stravinsky’s The Firebird and the third act of Richard Wagner’s Tannhäuser (concert performance) starring Sergei Skorokhodov, Irina Churilova, Roman Burdenko, and Anna Markarova. The concert was preceded by a public audition for young musicians from the Stavropol Krai, the Republic of Ingushetia, the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, the Chechen Republic, the Republic of Dagestan, and the Kabardino-Balkar Republic. That same evening, the National State Opera and Ballet Theatre hosted a performance of Gaetano Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor (concert performance) under the baton of Valery Gergiev. The concert featured the leading soloists of the Mariinsky Opera and guest performers, such as Albina Shagimuratova, Migran Agadzhanian, Vladislav Sulimsky, and Vladimir Feliauer.

On 1 October and 2 October, the Concert Hall hosted a performance by the Mariinsky Chorus under the baton of Andrei Petrenko. The programme included classical Russian choral pieces and folk songs. Moreover, a combined orchestra of the Mariinsky Orchestra and the Mariinsky Orchestra of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania musicians performed works by Modest Mussorgsky, Sergei Prokofiev, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Richard Wagner, and Ludwig van Beethoven. On 1 October, the combined orchestra performed together with Pavel Milyukov (violin), a prize-winner of the XV International Tchaikovsky Competition. Maria Bayankina (soprano), a soloist of the Mariinsky Academy of Young Opera Singers, performed with the orchestra at the concert on 2 October.

The festival then continued with the latest premieres of the Mariinsky Theatre's branch in the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, namely The Picture of Dorian Gray staged by Valery Suanov (3 October) and Khristof Pliev’s opera Kosta staged by Anatoly Galaov (4 October).

At the close of the festival, the spectators had a chance to attend the Talents of Caucasus concert (6 October) and on-tour performances of the Leonid Yakobson Ballet Theatre (5 October and 6 October). The ensemble gave two performances of the gala programme, Choreographic Miniatures by Leonid Yakobson, as well as hosted a charity performance for younger audiences. On 7 October, the festival will conclude with the opera The Adventures of Kintaro by Rustam Sagdiev, a young composer and a soloist of the Mariinsky Academy of Young Opera Singers.
