Marking 205 years Since the Birth of Giuseppe Verdi

On 10 October, the Mariinsky Theatre marks 205 years since the birth of Giuseppe Verdi. In honour of the composer, the Mariinsky Theatre’s venues will show six out of 14 Verdi’s operas, which are currently part of the theatre’s repertoire, in October. In the 2018/2019 season, the Mariinsky Theatre also offers two subscriptions composed entirely out of Giuseppe Verdi’s works. The music works, structured in chronological order from Verdi’s early opera Attila (1846) to Falstaff (1893), which is the highlight of the composer’s creative path, help to follow the evolution of Verdi’s skills as a dramaturgist and to enjoy the sound of the Mariinsky Opera ensemble of Verdi performers.

On the day of Verdi’s birthday, the Mariinsky II will host a performance of I vespri siciliani staged by Arnaud Bernard. It is Verdi’s first work written in accordance with grand opera genre conventions: five acts, detailed historic background, presence of a ballet divertissement, and participation of a chorus. I vespri siciliani is not a frequent guest at world venues anymore. The Mariinsky Theatre staged the opera in 2017. For the 10 October performance (18:30), Vladimir Moroz (Monforte), Denis Zakirov (Arrigo), Zhanna Dombrovskaya (Elena), and Vladimir Feliauer (Giovanni da Procida) will appear in lead roles. Another performance will take place a day before, on 9 October (18:30). Featured performers are Vladislav Sulimsky (Monforte), Migran Agadzhanyan (Arrigo), Irina Churilova (Elena), and Stanislav Trofimov (Giovanni da Procida). Christian Knapp will conduct both performances.

Moreover, the Mariinsky II’s October playbill includes four operas by Giuseppe Verdi. On 4 October (19:00), the lead roles in Rigoletto (staged by Irkin Gabitov) will be performed by Sergei Skorokhodov (Duke of Mantua), Edem Umerov (Rigoletto), and Aigul Khismatullina (Gilda). Conductor: Pavel Smelkov. On 12 October (19:30), Attila staged by Arturo Gama will feature Vladimir Feliauer (Attila), Anna Markarova (Odabella), Roman Burdenko (Ezio), and Otar Jorjikia (Foresto) as leads. Conductor: Christian Knapp. Don Carlo performance (26 October, 18:30) will feature the Mariinsky Opera’s leading soloists, such as Yevgeny Nikitin (Philip II), Sergei Skorokhodov (Don Carlo), Alexei Markov (Rodrigo), Sergei Aleksashkin (the Grand Inquisitor), Tatiana Serjan (Elisabeth de Valois), and Yulia Matochkina (Princess Eboli). The Mariinsky Orchestra will be conducted by Christian Knapp. The Verdi marathon will continue with three performances of the 2017/2018 season premiere, Falstaff, staged by Andrea De Rosa. The title role of Sir John Falstaff will be played by Edem Umerov (28 October, 15:00), Vadim Kravets (28 October, 20:00), and Vladislav Sulimsky (29 October, 19:00). Conductor: Christian Knapp. Furthermore, on 1 November, the Mariinsky II will host a performance of Un ballo in maschera staged by Andrei Konchalovsky. The production has successfully run at the Mariinsky Theatre for more than 15 years. The main roles will be performed by Otar Jorjikia (Riccardo), Alexei Markov (Renato), and Tatiana Serjan (Amelia).

The historic stage of the Mariinsky Theatre will see a performance of Aida staged by Alexei Stepanyuk (21 October, 19:00). The title role will be sung by Tatiana Serjan, while Oleg Videman and Yuri Vorobiev will appear as Radames and Ramfis respectively. Conductor: Andrei Petrenko.

The Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre (Vladivostok) will mark the important date with performances of La traviata (12 October) and Rigoletto (26 October).
