The VI International Organ Festival at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre

From 13 October to 21 October, the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre hosts the sixth edition of the International Organ Festival. This year festival’s participants include musicians from Russia, France, Sweden, the Netherlands, and South Korea; many of them are well-known to the St Petersburg audiences, but some will also make their debut at the venue. The concert programmes include classical organ repertory pieces, organ concertos, transcriptions, and improvisations.

On 13 October (19.00), the VI International Organ Festival will open with a recital by young Swedish musician Johannes Skoog, who studied under famed musicians Olivier Latry and Thierry Escaich. The programme of the organist’s debut performance at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre includes works by Claude Debussy, Marcel Dupré, Franz Liszt, Jehan Alain, and Maurice Duruflé.

Debut performers at the festival include Daria Burlak, a prize-winner of one of the most prestigious international organ competitions Grand Prix de Chartres (France). The competition opens doors to the world stage for its winners. For the 14 October concert (19.00), Daria Burlak’s programme features works by Dietrich Buxtehude, Domenico Scarlatti, Johann Sebastian Bach, Marcel Dupré and other composers.

Leo van Doeselaar (Netherlands), a titular organist of the Royal Concertgebouw and the church Martinikerk in Groningen, will make his debut at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre. The programme of his recital will be dedicated to works by French and German composers (20 October, 20.00).

Renowned organist Thierry Escaich (France), who is a frequent guest performer at the organ festival, will give two concerts with the Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Mischa Damev (19 October, 19.00 and 20 October, 13.00). Another frequent guest at the festival is organist Lada Labzina, who will present her own transcription of Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition this year (17 October, 19.00). In addition to works by César Franck and Camille Saint-Saëns, Thierry Escaich’s concert programmes include his own works, such as Organ Concerto No. 3, as well as transcriptions and improvisations.

The VI International Organ Festival will conlude with a performance of another debutant Shin Dong Ill (South Korea), a prize-winner of the Grand Prix de Chartres (2006) and the International Organ Competition in Musashino (Japan). The organist will present a retrospective of organ music from the 18th to 20th centuries (21 October, 20.00).
