The II International Caucasus Festival The Mariinsky – Vladikavkaz

From 30 September to 7 October, the Mariinsky Theatre's branch in the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania hosts the II International Caucasus Festival The Mariinsky – Vladikavkaz. The festival’s programme includes performances of the Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev, the leading soloists of the Mariinsky Opera and the Mariinsky Academy of Young Opera Singers, the National State Opera and Ballet Theatre of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania (the Mariinsky Theatre branch), and on-tour concerts of the Leonid Yakobson Ballet Theatre.

The first day of the festival hosted by the State Academic Philharmonic of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania will see a concert performance of Richard Wagner’s Tannhäuser (act III, 16:00). Sergei Skorokhodov (Heinrich Tannhäuser), Irina Churilova (Elisabeth), Roman Burdenko (Wolfram von Eschenbach), and Anna Markarova (Venus). That same night the National State Opera and Ballet Theatre will host a concert performance of Gaetano Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor (20.00). Albina Shagimuratova (Lucia di Lammermoor), Migran Agadzhanian (Sir Edgar Ravenswood), Vladislav Sulimsky (Lord Henry Ashton), and Vladimir Feliauer (Raimondo Bidebent) will appear in the lead roles. Both times the Mariinsky Orchestra will be conducted by Valery Gergiev.

The festival’s operatic programme will continue with last season’s premiere, Khristof Pliev’s opera Kosta staged by Anatoly Galaov (4 October, 19.00). It is a production of the Mariinsky Theatre branch in Vladikavkaz. Featured performers are soloists of the National State Opera and Ballet Theatre of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, the Mariinsky Theatre (St Petersburg), and artistes of the State Digorian Drama Theatre. The lead part will be sung by Dzambolat Dulaev, student of the Music Theatre Department of the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts (GITIS) and prize-winner of the V International Pavel Lisitsian Competition (Vladikavkaz, 2017). The performance will be conducted by Zaurbek Gugkaev.

The operatic programme will conclude with The Adventures of Kintaro, an opera for children based on various themes and images of Japanese folklore (7 October, 12.00 and 15.00). It is the second opera created by Rustam Sagdiev, soloist of the Mariinsky Academy of Young Opera Singers, which is dedicated to the Academy and its director Larisa Gergieva.

The State Academic Philharmonic of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania will also host a series of concerts during the festival. On 1 October, the Mariinsky Chorus under the baton of Andrei Petrenko will perform classical Russian choral pieces and folk songs (18.00). In the evening, a united orchestra, which includes musicians of the Mariinsky Orchestra and the Mariinsky Orchestra of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania branch, will appear in concert. Under the baton of Zaurbek Gugkaev, the musicians will perform Night on Bald Mountain and Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky, and Violin Concerto by Igor Stravinsky. Featured soloist is Pavel Milyukov, a prize-winner of the XV International Tchaikovsky Competition (20.00). On 2 October, the Mariinsky Chorus under the baton of Andrei Petrenko will perform Sergei Rachmaninoff’s All-Night Vigil (18.00), while at 20.00, another joint concert of the Mariinsky Orchestra and the Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre branch will take place. It will be conducted by Zaurbek Gugkaev. The programme includes Ludwig van Beethoven’s overture Egmont, Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, and Richard Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder (featured soloist: Maria Bayankina). On 6 October, the concert Talents of Caucasus helmed by Timur Zangiev will gather the most gifted young artistes of the region.

The ballet programme of the festival will be hosted by National State Opera and Ballet Theatre. On 3 October, the last premiere of the Mariinky Theatre branch in Vladikavkaz in the previous season, The Picture of Dorian Gray staged by Valery Suanov and set to the music by Abel Korzeniowski, Max Richter and Murat Kabardokov, will be shown at the theatre (19.00).

The Leonid Yakobson Ballet Theatre is the guest company of the festival. The ensemble will give three performances. On 5 October and 6 October, the soirée gala programme will include miniatures choreographed by Leonid Yakobson (19.00), while the 6 October matinée concert (14.00) is intended for younger audiences.
