Valery Gergiev and the Munich Philharmonic Open New Concert Season

On 19 September, Valery Gergiev and the Munich Philharmonic open the new 2018/2019 season. That evening the Philharmonie of the Gasteig will host a performance of the last works by Anton Bruckner (Symphony No. 9) and Bernd Alois Zimmermann (Ich wandte mich um und sah alles Unrecht das geschah unter der Son/ne for two readers, bass and orchestra). The readers will be played by actors Michael Rotschopf and Josef Bierbichler, while the vocal part will be performed by Georg Nigl (baritone). The following day will see a performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 and Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 2. The last evening of the concert series will see a performance of Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 8 at the home stage of the Munich Philharmonic on 21 September.

Then Valery Gergiev is heading to France to conclude Der Ring des Nibelungen cycle with the Mariinsky Theatre ensemble at the Philharmonie de Paris. However, on 24 September, Valery Gergiev will once again conduct the Munich Philharmonic during their on-tour performances in Sankt Florian (Austria), where the musicians are set to perform at the International Bruckner Festival. The Munich Philharmonic under the baton of Valery Gergiev will thus continue to implement a truly monumental project that includes performing and live recording all of Anton Bruckner’s symphonies at one of the oldest and largest monasteries in Austria, St. Florian Monastery, which is also the composer's burial site. During its last visit in September of 2017, the ensemble performed Anton Bruckner’s Symphonies No. 1, No. 3, and No. 4, the recordings of which were later released by the Munich Philharmonic’s own label. This year will see a performance of Symphony No. 2 (24 September), Symphony No. 9 (25 September), and Symphony No. 8 (26 September). The programme of the first soirée performance also features Johann Sebastian Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor, performed by Martin Haselböck, an Austrian organist, conductor, and composer, as well as Haselböck’s own piece on the theme of Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 2. On 25 September, the concert programme also includes Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony No. 40. Valery Gergiev and the Munich Philharmonic plan to conclude their Austrian cycle of all of Anton Bruckner’s symphonies in September 2019.

Valery Gergiev’s contract with the Munich Philharmonic has been extended until 2025. The maestro has been Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the German ensemble since the 2015/2016 season.
