The Mariinsky Orchestra to Perform on Tour with the National Centre for the Performing Arts (China)

On 14 September and 15 September, the Mariinsky Orchestra is scheduled to take part in on-tour performances of the Chinese National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Moscow. The Central Academic Theatre of the Russian Army will host an opera gala and a performance of The Dawns Here Are Quiet by the Chinese composer Tang Jianping. Lü Jia, the NCPA’s Music Director, will conduct the performance.

The first soirée performance will be dedicated to European music. The 14 September gala concert programme includes arias from operas by Mikhail Glinka, Giacomo Puccini, Giuseppe Verdi, Franz Lehár, Gioachino Rossini, and Ruggero Leoncavallo. The following day will see a concert performance of Tang Jianping’s opera The Dawns Here Are Quiet after Boris Vasilyev’s novel of the same name. The world premiere of the opera, which was written to mark 70th anniversary of the victory over fascism and commissioned by the National Centre for the Performing Arts, took place in Beijing in 2015. In Russia, the opera premiered on 11 September and 12 September at the Mariinsky II.

The National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), the largest Chinese music theatre, is a long-time partner of the Mariinsky Theatre. According to the Wang Ning, the NCPA President, this tour of the Chinese ensemble is the most large-scale and significant project of the Centre for Cultural and Artistic Exchanges with Russia to date.
