Parade of Russian Music Ensues as Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra Go on Tour

Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra head on their traditional summer tour, which includes performances at major European music festivals. From 21 August to 26 August, the musicians will appear in concerts in Italy, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, and Sweden.

On 21 August and 22 August, the Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev will perform on tour in Italy as part of the international Russian Seasons cultural project. On 21 August, the ensemble will appear the 66th music festival in Ravello, which is one of the oldest and the most well-known festivals in Italy. The outdoor stage of the Villa Rufolo will host a performance of Igor Stravinsky’s ballet Pétrouchka and Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Manfred Symphony.

The following day, Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Manfred Symphony will be performed under the baton of Valery Gergiev at the Merano Music Weeks in South Tyrol. The programme also includes Claude Debussy’s Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune and Felix Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 4 (the Italian).

Then the Mariinsky Orchestra will head to Liechtenstein to perform at the opening of the Vaduz Classic Festival together with Denis Matsuev in the capital of the principality (23 August). The marketplace of Vaduz, which hosts the open air concerts of the festival, will see performances of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and Richard Strauss’ Eine Alpensinfonie.

The same programme will be performed on 24 August during the first of the two soirée concerts of the Mariinsky Orchestra and Valery Gergiev at the Menuhin Festival Gstaad (Switzerland). The solo in Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1will be performed by Denis Matsuev. On25 August, the young virtuoso violinist Daniel Lozakovitj will appear in concert with the Mariinsky Orchestra. The mono programme dedicated to Pyotr Tchaikovsky includes the composer’s Violin Concerto and Manfred Symphony.

The final concert of the Mariinsky Orchestra tour will take place at the Baltic Sea Festival in Stockholm (Sweden) on 26 August. The Berwaldhallen concert hall will see performances of music from Igor Stravinsky’s ballets Pétrouchka and The Firebird, as well as excerpts from Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tale of Tsar Saltan. Some background information: the annual Baltic Sea Festival was founded in 2003 by Valery Gergiev, Michael Tydén, director of the Berwaldhallen concert hall, and Esa-Pekka Salonen, conductor.

Upon the completion of his tour with the Mariinsky Orchestra, Valery Gergiev will continue to tour in Europe with the Munich Philharmonic.
