Closing of the III International Mariinsky Far East Festival in Vladivostok

Today is the closing day of the III International Mariinsky Far East Festival in Vladivostok, which ran from 24 July to 8 August at the venues of the Primorsky Stage. Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades is the last performance on the festival’s playbill (8 August, 19.00). The production is staged by Yuri Temirkanov and stars Najmiddin Mavlyanov (Herman), Elena Stikhina (Liza), Larisa Diadkova (the Countess), Yulia Matochkina (Polina), Alexei Markov (Prince Yeletsky), and Roman Burdenko (Count Tomsky). The performance will be conducted by Pavel Smelkov.

• 7 Far East premieres: Jules Massenet’s opera Don Quichotte staged by Yannis Kokkos, Richard Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde staged by Dmitri Tcherniakov, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Così fan tutte, and Richard Strauss’ Salome (concert performance); Ludwig Minkus’ ballet Don Quixote choreographed by Alexander Gorsky after Marius Petipa’s original production, The Four Seasons choreographed by Ilya Zhivoi and set to the music by Max Richter (based on the music by Antonio Vivaldi), and Sergei Prokofiev’s Cinderella staged by Alexei Ratmansky;
• new educational projects of the Primorsky Stage entitled Scenic Introduction.

On 24 July, the festival opened with the Far East premiere of Ludwig Minkus’ ballet Don Quixote choreographed by Alexander Gorsky after Marius Petipa’s original production. The lead roles were performed by the stellar dancers of the Mariinsky Ballet. The festival continued with the premiere of The Four Seasons ballet staged by Ilya Zhivoi, which was preceded by a new educational project of the Primorsky Stage entitled Scenic Introduction. The ballet part of the festival closed with the premiere of Sergei Prokofiev’s Cinderella staged by Alexei Ratmansky. Such dancers as Ekaterina Kondaurova, Nadezhda Batoeva, Kristina Shapran, Renata Shakirova, Timur Askerov, Kimin Kim, Vladimir Shklyarov, and Konstantin Zverev starred in the festival’s performances.

The concert programme of the III International Mariinsky Far East Festival opened with a performance of Lorenz Nasturica-Herschcowici (Germany) and the Chamber Orchestra of the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre. The festival’s playbill was graced with the performances of violinists Miura Fumiaki (Japan) and Lorenz Nasturica-Herschcowici with the Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Shizuo Z Kuwahara (Japan), as well as the recitals of the young pianist Alexandra Dovgan. The symphony music part of the festival’s programme concluded with a monographic concert Mozart, where the violinist Yeol Eum Son (South Korea) played solo in Piano Concerto No. 20. The performance of Mozart’s Requiem featured the Atkins Young Artists Program fellows, Evelina Agabalaeva, soloist of the Mariinsky Academy of Young Opera Singers, and the Mariinsky Orchestra of the Primorsky Stage under the baton of Pavel Smelkov.

The highlight of the festival’s operatic programme was the premiere of Richard Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde conducted by Valery Gergiev (and staged by Dmitri Tcherniakov). Valery Gergiev also conducted the concert performances of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta and Richard Strauss’ Salome. The main roles in the productions were performed by the leading Mariinsky Opera soloists and guest stars, including Elena Stikhina, Irina Churilova, Yulia Matochkina, Mikhail Vekua, Najmiddin Mavlyanov, Roman Burdenko, Alexei Markov, Yevgeny Nikitin, Yuri Vorobiev, and Mikhail Petrenko. The performances of Valery Gergiev, the Mariinsky Orchestra, and the Mariinsky Opera soloists at the Primorsky Stage were preceded by their on-tour concerts in Guangzhou (China), where they presented the production of Sergei Prokofiev’s opera War and Peace staged by Andrei Konchalovsky. The festival also hosted the Far East premiere of the opera Don Quichotte staged by Yannis Kokkos. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Così fan tutte (act I) was performed at the Primorsky Stage for the first time with the participation of the fellows of the Atkins Young Artists Program. Other productions of the Primorsky Stage to be performed by the leading soloists of the Mariinsky Theatre at the festival include Georges Bizet’s Carmen staged by Daria Panteleeva and Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades staged by Yuri Temirkanov.

The Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre’s season will continue with on-tour performances of the National Ballet of China and memorable productions from the theatre’s own repertoire, including such operas as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Giuseppe Verdi’s Rigoletto, Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tale of Tsar Saltan and such ballets as Adolphe Adam’s Giselle, Igor Stravinsky’s The Firebird, Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and many others. And on 11 September, the Primorsky Stage audiences will enjoy the premiere of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tsar's Bride staged by Vyacheslav Starodubtsev.

A quick reminder: the Primorsky Stage ballet is now successfully touring in St Petersburg, at the historic stage of the Mariinsky Theatre. The last on-tour performance, which will conclude the 2017/2018 season of the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, is Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s ballet-féerie The Sleeping Beauty (12 August).
