The Mariinsky Theatre’s Chinese Tour

On 2 August and 3 August, the Mariinsky Theatre ensemble with Valery Gergiev at its helm will tour in China. The Guangzhou Opera House will host a performance of Sergei Prokofiev’s opera War and Peace staged by Andrei Konchalovsky. It is a production of truly epic proportions (sophisticated decorations weighing over 60 tons, around 1,000 costumes, and more than 200 artists involved). The lead roles will be performed by Alexei Markov (Prince Andrei Bolkonsky), Violetta Lukyanenko (Natasha Rostova), Yekaterina Krapivina (Sonya), Olga Savova (Maria Akhrosimova), Vladimir Feliauer (Count Ilya Rostov), Yevgeny Akimov (Pierre Bezukhov), Yekaterina Sergeyeva (Hélène Bezukhova), Alexander Mikhailov (Anatol Kuragin), Yuri Vlasov (Dolokhov), Zlata Bulycheva (Princess Marya), Pavel Shmulevich (Field-Marshal Mikhail Kutuzov), and Alexander Nikitin (Napoleon). The Mariinsky Orchestra will be conducted by Valery Gergiev.

The production (a joint project with the Metropolitan Opera) staged by Andrei Konchalovsky and designed by George Tsypin premiered on 11 March, 2000. It became one of the productions most shown on tour, while the geographical scope of the performances was quite vast. The opera travelled to many renowned venues around the world, including La Scala in Milan, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden in London, as well as a number of other European and Asian venues.

During the season, the Mariinsky Theatre often tours in China, visiting Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Harbin and many other major cities. The theatre also collaborates with many Chinese ensembles. On 31 July, for instance, the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre will welcome the China Philharmonic Orchestra for the first time, which will perform under the baton of Long Yu, its Artistic Director and Principal Conductor. And one of the first major events of the 2018/19 season is the Russian premiere of Tang Jianping’s The Dawns Here Are Quiet, which is a production of the National Centre for the Performing Arts in China.

Moreover, Chinese musicians annually take part in the International Mariinsky Far East Festival in Vladivostok. On 3 August, as part of the III International Mariinsky Far East Festival, the Primorsky Philharmonic Hall will host a recital of the famous Chinese bass-baritone Shenyang, who is a prize-winner of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World international competition. Right after the closing of the III International Mariinsky Far East Festival, the Primorsky Stage will welcome on-tour performances of the National Ballet of China. On 11 August and 12 August, the company will present his own version of Ludwig Minkus’ ballet La Bayadère choreographed by Natalia Makarova on the basis of Marius Petipa’s and Vakhtang Chabukiani’s original choreography.
