The III International Mariinsky Far East Festival (Vladivostok) will open at the Primorsky Stage with the Far East premiere of the classic Mariinsky Theatre production – Ludwig Minkus’ ballet Don Quixote – choreographed by Alexander Gorsky after Marius Petipa’s original production (24 July and 25 July). The lead roles will be performed by the stellar dancers of the Mariinsky Ballet. On 24 July, Kimin Kim (Basilio), Renata Shakirova (Kitri), Ekaterina Kondaurova (Street Dancer), and Konstantin Zverev (Espada) will grace the stage, while on July 25 Timur Askerov (Basilio), Nadezhda Batoeva (Kitri), Kristina Shapran (Street Dancer), and Roman Belyakov (Espada) will perform in the production. On 26 July and 27 July, Vladivostok will see the premiere of The Four Seasons ballet set to the music of Max Richter (based on the famous violin concertos by Antonio Vivaldi) and staged by Ilya Zhivoi. The ballet The Four Seasons is based on a sketch – one-act ballet SeasonS – which successfully premiered at the I International Mariinsky Far East Festival back in 2016. Now, two years later, the spectators will enjoy the full version of the young choreographer’s production.The solo parts will be performed by Ekaterina Kondaurova and Roman Belyakov (26 July), Kristina Shapran and Konstantin Zverev (27 July). The ballet part of the festival will close with the premiere of Sergei Prokofiev’s Cinderella staged by Alexei Ratmansky. The performances will take place on 28 July and twice on 29 July (14.00 and 19.00). Alexei Ratmansky’s first grand ballet, created for the Mariinsky Theatre in 2001, has been a favorite with the St Petersburg public for many years, attracting audiences with its ironic and memorable interpretation of Sergei Prokofiev’s monumental score. The performances, featuring appearances by the Mariinsky Theatre leading soloists, will mark the first time the production is presented with such a stellar cast in Vladivostok. On 28 July, the lead roles will be performed by Kimin Kim (Prince), Renata Shakirova (Cinderella), and Ekaterina Kondaurova (Stepmother). On 29 July (14.00), Konstantin Zverev (Prince), Kristina Shapran (Cinderella), and Tatiana Tkachenko (Stepmother) will appear in the lead roles. The soirée performance (29 July, 19.00) will star Vladimir Shklyarov (Prince), Nadezhda Batoeva (Cinderella), and Ekaterina Kondaurova (Stepmother). The accompagnement will be provided by the Mariinsky Orchestra.
The concert programme of the III International Mariinsky Far East Festival will open with a performance of Lorenz Nasturica-Herschcowici, renowned violinist and conductor, with the Chamber Orchestra of the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre on 27 July. They will perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 and Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. Another highlight of the festival’s concert programmes is the performance of violinists Miura Fumiaki and Lorenz Nasturica-Herschcowici with the Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Shizuo Z Kuwahara (Japan) on 30 July. Miura Fumiaki is the youngest ever winner in the history of the coveted Joseph Joachim Hannover International Violin Competition. The violinist frequently performs on tour and plays the Antonio Stradivarius 1704 violin, the Viotti. The Great Hall of the Primorsky Stage will see a performance of the overture from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Violin Concerto (both by Felix Mendelssohn) and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s symphonic suite Scheherazade that night. Yet another jewel of the concert playbill is the performance of the famed violinist Yeol Eum Son (South Korea) and the Mariinsky Orchestra of the Primorsky Stage under the baton of the renowned conductor Justus Frantz (Germany) on 7 August. Yeol Eum Son is a prize-winner of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and the International Tchaikovsky Competition. She successfully performed at the I International Mariinsky Far East Festival in Vladivostok in 2016. This year’s visit to Vladivostok will be marked by a joint performance with Justus Frantz; the two musicians will perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 for the first time ever. The concert’s programme also includes Mozart’s Requiem.
On 3 August and 5 August, Vladivostok will host two performances of the young pianist Alexandra Dovgan. She is just 11 years old and has already won the Grand Prix of the II International Grand Piano Competition. Alexandra Dovgan has already appeared in recitals in St Petersburg during the XXVI Music Festival Stars of the White Nights. At the Primorsky Stage, the pianist will perform Felix Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1 (3 August). The programme also includes Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique and Felix Mendelssohn’s Overture The Hebrides, or Fingal’s Cave. The Mariinsky Orchestra of the Primorsky Stage will be conducted by Anton Shaburov. On 5 August, Alexandra Dovgan will appear in recital at the Chamber Hall. She will perform the works of François Couperin, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Sergei Prokofiev, Johann Sebastian Bach, Marc-André Hamelin, Frédéric Chopin, Moritz Moszkowski, and Sergei Bortkiewicz.
The operatic programme of the festival features Far East premieres of such operas as Jules Massenet’s Don Quichotte staged by Yannis Kokkos (31 July and 6 August), Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Così fan tutte (semi-staged performance; 1 August), and Richard Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde staged by Dmitri Tcherniakov and conducted by Valery Gergiev (5 August). The main roles will be performed by the leading soloists of the Mariinsky Opera, namely Yulia Matochkina, Mikhail Vekua, Yevgeny Nikitin, Yuri Vorobiev, Mikhail Petrenko, and Andrey Serov, as well as young talented soloists – the fellows of the Atkins Young Artists Program. Concert performance of Richard Strauss’ one-act musical drama Salome will mark another premiere at the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre. Elena Stikhina, soloist of the Mariinsky Theatre and the Primorsky Stage, will appear in the title role. She previously gave a memorable performance of that same role at the premiere in St Petersburg in 2017. The Mariinsky Orchestra will be conducted by Valery Gergiev (4 August, 20.00). That same day maestro Valery Gergiev will also conduct the concert performance of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta featuring truly stellar performers: Irina Churilova, Najmiddin Mavlyanov, Alexei Markov, Mikhail Petrenko, and Roman Burdenko (4 August, 16.00). Other productions of the Primorsky Stage to be performed by the leading soloists of the Mariinsky Theatre at the festival include Carmen staged by Daria Panteleeva (2 August) and Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades staged by Yuri Temirkanov (8 August). The performances will star Elena Stikhina, Irina Churilova, Yulia Matochkina, Najmiddin Mavlyanov, Roman Burdenko, and Alexei Markov and will be conducted by Christian Knapp (2 August) and Pavel Smelkov (8 August).
