Unique Prokofiev Edition, New Release of Complete Collection of Symphonies and Concerts

On June 15, a unique and complete collection of Sergei Prokofiev’s symphonies and instrumental concertos went on sale. It is a joint release of Arthaus Musik, Telmondis Distribution, and the Mariinsky Theatre.

In April of 2016, an unprecedented marathon of Sergei Prokofiev’s works bound Moscow and St Petersburg together via a chronologically arranged sequence of concerts timed to coincide with 125 years since the birth of the composer. The marathon was organized at the initiative of Valery Gergiev. On 23 April and 24 April, the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre hosted the performances of more than 30 works by Prokofiev. These concerts resulted in a collector’s edition of almost 700 minutes of music (7 DVDs/4 Blu-rays), recorded with the participation of the world’s leading musicians, the Mariinsky Orchestra, and the Mariinsky Chorus under the baton of Valery Gergiev.

Apart from all of the composer’s symphonies, the collection includes a recording of The Scythian Suite (Ala i Lolli) and all of Prokofiev’s instrumental concertos. Featured soloists for the piano concertos are as follows: Denis Kozhukhin (Piano Concerto No. 1), Denis Matsuev (Piano Concerto No. 2), Daniil Trifonov (Piano Concerto No. 3), Sergei Redkin (Piano Concerto No. 4), Vadym Kholodenko (Piano Concerto No. 5). Featured soloists for the violin concertos are Leonidas Kavakos (Violin Concerto No. 1) and Kristóf Baráti (Violin Concerto No. 2), while Alexander Ramm is the soloist for the Symphony-Concerto for cello.

The vocal-instrumental works in the collection include the cantata Alexander Nevsky featuring Olga Borodina (mezzo-soprano), the oratorio Ivan the Terrible featuring Yulia Matochkina (mezzo-soprano), Mikhail Petrenko (bass), and theatre and film actor Alexei Petrenko (as the Reader), the cantata Seven, They Are Seven featuring the Helikon-Opera soloist Igor Morozov (tenor) and the State Academic Kozhevnikov Moscow Regional Chorus.

There is also an extra addition to the musical content as the collection also includes Anna Matison’s Prokofiev: On the Way documentary, which is a chronicle of both Sergei Prokofiev’s life (based on the composer’s diary entries) and the XI Moscow Easter Festival dedicated to Sergei Prokofiev.
