The Opening of the XVII Moscow Easter Festival

April 8, Easter Day, will see the opening of the XVII Moscow Easter Festival. The Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev will give two performances in Moscow. The first concert starts at 12 pm at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, where the soloists of the Mariinsky Opera, the Mariinsky Chorus and the Mariinsky Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev will present a concert performance of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s opera Iolanta. Lead parts will be sung by Irina Churilova (Iolanta), Migran Agadzhanyan (Count Vaudémont), Alexei Markov (Robert), Stanislav Trofimov (René, King of Provence), and Roman Burdenko (Ibn-Hakia). Live broadcast from the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall will be organized in collaboration with the Moscow Philharmonic for the Far East and other regions of Russia which are participating in The All-Russian Virtual Concert Hall project. In Vladivostok, the performance will be screened at the Small Hall of the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre. In the evening, at 7 pm, the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory will host the grand opening of the XVII Moscow Easter Festival. The  musicians will subsequently set out on one of the greatest tours in the festival’s history and the record music marathon will run for 32 days. The ensemble will travel a distance of more than 20,000 kilometres and perform in almost 30 cities and towns of Russia.

Participants of the festival include the Mariinsky soloists, the Mariinsky Chorus and the Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev, the Stradivarius Ensemble of the Mariinsky Theatre, the Mariinsky Brass Ensemble, as well as pianists Seong-Jin Cho, Denis Matsuev, Behzod Abduraimov; violinists Kristóf Baráti, Eric Silberger, Lorenz Nasturica-Herschcowici, Pavel Milyukov; cellists Narek Akhnazaryan, Alexander Ramm, Alexander Buzlov; vocalists Eva-Maria Westbroek, Albina Shagimuratova and participants of the Atkins program, namely Aigul Khismatullina, Angelina Akhmedova, Vladislav Kupriyanov, Anna Muradyan, Ekaterina Sannikova, Anastasia Shchegoleva, and many others.

The festival will traditionally present four programmes: symphony music, choral music, chamber music, and bell-ringing. The performances will be held at major concert venues in Moscow and Russia’s regions. The Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre in Vladivostok will join the Symphonic Programme. Vladivostok will see the performances of the soloists, Chorus and Orchestra of the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre under the baton of Pavel Smelkov and Valery Trubin-Leonov, as well as the Mixed Choir of the Primorsky Metropolis.

The finest choral ensembles of various countries throughout the world will once again acquaint the audiences with the vivid culture of choral performance, through its incredibly rich traditions and amazing diversity. This year the participants include ensembles from Russia, the Republic of Abkhazia, Belarus, Armenia, Georgia, Slovakia, Sweden, Greece, Finland, and Bulgaria.

Chamber Programme will be presented by the leading soloists of the Mariinsky Academy of Young Opera Singers and its artistic director Larisa Gergieva. Concerts featuring Russian romances, world opera masterpieces as well as a series of open rehearsals and vocal master-classes will be held in Moscow and other regions of Russia.

Bells Week will be held at the best historical and modern bell-towers and belfries of Moscow and Russia’s regions. This year Finland has joined the bell-ringing programme for the first time.

The XVII Moscow Easter Festival will traditionally come to orphanages and boarding schools, homes for the disabled and veterans. The highlight of the Festival will be the traditional concert of the Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev on Poklonnaya Hill on the Victory Day (May 9).

The XVII Moscow Easter Festival will run from 8 April to 9 May 2018, with the support of the Moscow Government, the Russian Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Defense and the blessing of His Holiness Kirill, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia.
