The Opening of the II International Harp Festival Northern Lyre

The opening of the II International Harp Festival Northern Lyre will be held at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre on 2 April (19.00). The opening concert will see the world premiere of Dragana Jovanović’s Stories From My Forest for three harps. The programme also includes English and Estonian folk songs, medieval music, works by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Sergei Prokofiev and modern composers. The concert will feature the soloists of the Mariinsky Orchestra, LATERNA MAGICA Medieval music ensemble, and harpist trio from Serbia and Seven Plus brass ensemble.

The chamber repertoire of the II International Harp Festival Northern Lyre includes concerts at the Mussorgsky Hall (Mariinsky II). The duet of British vocalist Dia Maria Dali and Estonian harpist Kristi Mühling (who will play the ancient Estonian harp called kannel) will present their Music is the Sea programme on 3 April. The 4 April concert is dedicated to 140 year anniversary since the birth of Ksenia Erdeli, renowned harpist and the founder of the Soviet harp school. The concerts start at 19.30. The festival will close with a gala concert featuring the performance of the Mariinsky Orchestra and 10 harps. The orchestra will be conducted by Christian Knapp (5 April, Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre, 19.00).

Apart from concerts, the Northern Lyre festival playbill includes master classes of famous musicians such as Serbian professors Milena Stanisic (April 3, Prokofiev Hall, 12.00) and Ljiljana Nestorovska (April 4, Prokofiev Hall, 12.00), as well as renowned American harpist Maria Luisa Rayan (April 6, Stravinsky Foyer, 12.30). Entry is free, maximum capacity 100 persons.

Let us reminder the reader that the II International Harp Festival Northern Lyre will run from March 31 to April 6 at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre and chamber halls of the Mariinsky II. This year’s music forum’s playbill will include highly talented musicians representing the St Petersburg harp school, as well as performers from Serbia, the USA and Estonia. In the run up to festival, the Stravinsky Foyer (Mariinsky II) hosted The Sound of the Harp is My Inspiration concert with the participation of various representatives of St Petersburg musical dynasties (March 31, 13.00).

The festival is once again dedicated to harpist and philanthropist Yoko Nagae Ceschina, who helped many of the Mariinsky Theatre projects come to life.
