On 1 April (12.00), the premiere of new stage production of Francis Poulenc’s symphonic tale L'Histoire de Babar, le petit elephant will take place at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre.
Francis Poulenc got his inspiration for the symphonic tale from the illustrated book for children Histoire de Babar written by Jean de Brunhoff. The story about the adventures of a young elephant Babar was very popular with readers in France. The musical composition also gained recognition and became one of the most popular French classics for children.
The Mariinsky Theatre first premiered the symphonic tale in 2016. Stage director Alla Chepinoga came up with a light impromptu production for narrator and piano at the Prokofiev Hall (Mariinsky II). This time L'Histoire de Babar will come to life at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre. It will be performed by young artistes (aged from 6 to 14) and the chamber ensemble of the Mariinsky Theatre conducted by Ivan Stolbov. The audience will enjoy a musical tale about the unbelievable adventures of a little elephant, including his fleeing from hunters, living in a big city, growing up and returning home (production by Alla Chepinoga, set design by Marina Abdullaeva). Narrators: Ivan Chapkevich, Valeria Zhuravleva. The cast is as follows: Stefan Otto (Little Babar), Mikhail Dudin (Little Arthur), Michelle Chapkevich (Little Céleste), Maxim Filatov (Teenage Babar), Artem Ivanov (Teenage Arthur), Anna Darman (Teenage Céleste), Olga Kiseleva (Arthur's Mother) and Alexandra Petrova (Céleste's Mother).
The premiere performances at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre will also take place on 8 April, 30 April and 2 May (12.00).
