The II International Harp Festival Northern Lyre

The II International Harp Festival Northern Lyre will run from March 21 to April 6 at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre and chamber halls of the Mariinsky II. Last season’s festival was a remarkable event. This year’s music forum’s playbill will include highly talented musicians representing the St Petersburg harp school, as well as performers from Serbia, the USA and Estonia. The festival is once again dedicated to harpist and philanthropist Yoko Nagae Ceschina, who helped many of the Mariinsky Theatre projects come to life.

The programme of the II International Harp Festival Northern Lyre covers music from the Middle Ages to contemporary music and includes academic, ethnic and jazz pieces. The harp will be played as a solo instrument in various arrangements (with vocal accompagnement and other instruments) and in concerto. Apart from the classic harp, the festival’s concert will feature Estonian kannel, hurdy-gurdy and Romanesque harp.

In the run up to festival, the Stravinsky Foyer (Mariinsky II) will host The Sound of the Harp is My Inspiration concert (March 31, 1 pm). The festival will open on April 2 at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre with the participation of the Mariinsky Orchestra, LATERNA MAGICA ensemble of medieval music, harpist trio from Serbia and Seven Plus brass ensemble.

On April 3 the Mussorgsky Hall (Mariinsky II) will host the concert Music is the Sea by the duet of British vocalist Dia Maria Dali and Estonian harpist Kristi Mühling, who will play the ancient Estonian harp called kannel. The April 4 concert is dedicated to 140 year anniversary since the birth of Ksenia Erdeli, renowned harpist and the founder of the Soviet harp school (Mussorgsky Hall, Mariinsky II). The concerts start at 7.30 pm.

The festival will close with a grand gala concert with the performances of the Mariinsky Orchestra and 10 harps. The orchestra will be conducted by Christian Knapp (April 5, Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre, 7 pm).

Apart from concerts, the Northern Lyre festival playbill includes master classes of famous musicians, Serbian professors Milena Stanisic (April 3, Prokofiev Hall, 12 am) and Ljiljana Nestorovska (April 4, Prokofiev Hall, 12 am), as well as renowned American harpist Maria Luisa Rayan (April 6, Stravinsky Foyer, 12.30 am). Entry is free, maximum capacity 100 persons.
