Valery Gergiev Continues His European Tour

After a series of performances with the Munich Philharmonic in Germany and Austria (from March 15 to March 17), Valery Gergiev will go on tour with the Mariinsky Orchestra. The musicians will perform in Switzerland, Germany, the Czech Republic and France from March 19 to March 25.

The concert tour will open with a performance in Basel (Switzerland) on March 19. The Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev will perform Claude Debussy’s Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 and Alexander Scriabin’s Piano Concerto. This performance will mark the debut of soloist Abisal Gergiev on the stage of the Music Theatre Basel.

The ensemble will continue the tour in Germany on March 20 and March 22. The Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev will give a concert at the Gasteig Philharmonie on March 20. The orchestra will perform fragments of Igor Stravinsky’s ballet The Firebird and Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5. The Mariinsky Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev will perform at the Berliner Philharmonie on March 22. The programme includes Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 (Pathétique) and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5. Famed Brazilian pianist Nelson Freire is the soloist for the performance.

From there the musicians will go to the Czech Republic, where they will give a concert at the Smetana Hall of Prague's Municipal House on March 23. Once again, the orchestra will perform Claude Debussy’s Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 (Pathétique) and fragments from Igor Stravinsky’s ballet The Firebird.

The concert tour will conclude in France. On March 24 and March 25, the soloists of the Mariinsky Opera, Mariinsky Choir and the Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev will present the prologue and the first day of Richard Wagner’s tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen (concert performance) at the Philharmonie de Paris. The performers of the main parts in Das Rheingold for March 24 include: Yuri Vorobiev (Wotan), Mikhail Vekua (Loge), Roman Burdenko (Alberich), Andrei Popov (Mime), Vadim Kravets (Fasolt), Mikhail Petrenko (Fafner), Anna Kiknadze (Fricka) and Zlata Bulycheva (Erda). The vocal parts in Die Walküre on March 25 will be performed by Mikhail Vekua (Siegmund), Yevgeny Nikitin (Wotan), Mikhail Petrenko (Hunding), Elena Stikhina (Sieglinde), Tatiana Pavlovskaya (Brünnhilde) and Yekaterina Sergeeva (Fricka).
