The Mariinsky Theatre Celebrates Marius Petipa’s Birthday

In 2018, the Mariinsky Theatre will mark 200 years since the birth of Marius Petipa, whose artistic career is closely intertwined with the St Petersburg theatre. The Mariinsky Theatre has prepared a diverse programme to celebrate the great choreographer’s birthday: presentations of classical productions with the participation of ballet stars at all of the theatre’s venues, premieres of new productions, grand gala concerts, special events and concert tours.

The repertoire of the historic stage of the Mariinsky Theatre and the Mariinsky II will include a plethora of ballets, which have long been on the playbill and are carefully passed on from generation to generation. Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake (March 14, March 16 and March 21, 7.30 pm, the Mariinsky  I), Ludwig Minkus’ Don Quixote (March 15, 7.30 pm; March 17, 7 pm, the Mariinsky Theatre) and La Bayadère (March 30 and March 31, 7 pm, the Mariinsky Theatre), Adolphe Adam’s Giselle (March 18, 8 pm; April 8, 7.30 pm, the Mariinsky Theatre), Édouard Deldevez, Ludwig Minkus and Riccardo Drigo’s Paquita (March 28, 7 pm; March 29, 7.30 pm, the Mariinsky Theatre) will be performed by the leading soloists of the Mariinsky Ballet and talented guest performers.

Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s ballet-féerie The Sleeping Beauty is going to make a comeback to the historic Mariinsky stage. It is the reconstruction of Marius Petipa’s 1890 production, which was made by Sergei Vikharev (1999), ballet master of the Mariinsky Theatre. The parts of Princess Aurora and Prince Désiré will be performed by Viktoria Tereshkina and Vladimir Shklyarov (March 8), Olesya Novikova and Timur Askerov (March 9). Lilac Fairy – Ekaterina Kondaurova and Oksana Skorik.

On March 22 and March 24, the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre dancers will present their own version of the ballet-féerie The Sleeping Beauty on the Mariinsky II stage. Marius Petipa’s choreography will be reinterpreted by Konstantin Sergeyev (1952) and Eldar Aliev (2017).
The gala soirée on the historic stage of the Mariinsky Theatre on the great ballet master’s birthday (March 11, 8 pm) will become the centerpiece of the celebrations. The gala concert’s diverse programme will include a true gem – the premiere of a new production by Konstantin Keikhel, who is one of the most prominent young Russian choreographers. The production is called The Seasons and is set to the music of Alexander Glazunov. The Mariinsky Orchestra will perform under the baton of Valery Gergiev.

The gala concert will be broadcast live on Mezzo and Mezzo Live HD TV channels (available in Russia as part of the Tricolor TV package).
