The Mariinsky Theatre is to host the III International Festival Maslenitsa in Song

From 12 to 18 February the Mariinsky Theatre will be hosting the III International Festival Maslenitsa in Song. During Shrovetide Week the Mariinsky Theatre’s venues will host performances by choral ensembles from Europe and from St Petersburg, there will be vivid opera productions and an a cappella marathon.

The III International Festival Maslenitsa in Song opens on 12 February with a performance by a renowned European ensemble – the Prague Philharmonic Chorus (Principal Chorus Master – Lukáš Vasilek). The programme includes Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů’s Cantatas of Vysočina (Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre, 19.00). The Prague Philharmonic Chorus collaborates with such orchestras as the Berliner, Czech and Israel Philharmonic Orchestras, the Wiener Symphoniker and the Berlin and Saxony State Cappellas, as well as with the conductors Daniel Barenboim, Christoph Eschenbach, Manfred Honeck, Fabio Luisi, Zubin Mehta and Sir Simon Rattle. The chorus’ discography includes releases on Deutsche Grammophon, Decca, Sony Classical and Supraphon.

On 14 February the Mariinsky Chorus under Andrei Petrenko will present Sergei Rachmaninoff’s All-Night Vigil (Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre, 19.00), while on 16 February at the Musorgsky Hall (Mariinsky-II) there will be an a cappella marathon. Its participants will include six youthful choral ensembles of St Petersburg. The concert begins at 18.00.

The festival also includes operatic works by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov: The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevronia directed by Dmitry Chernyakov (13 February, 18.30, Mariinsky II) and the merry spring-time tale The Snow Maiden staged by Alexander Galibin (15 and 16 February, 19.00, Mariinsky II).

The festival Maslenitsa in Song will conclude with two concerts on 18 February. At 15:00 the Children’s Chorus of St Petersburg TV and Radio (Principal Chorus Master – Igor Gribkov) and the Moscow Grand Popov Children’s Chorus (Artistic Director and Principal Conductor – Anatoly Kislyakov) will be performing songs from cartoons and films. Taking part in the concert will be the composers Viktor Pleshak and Marina Landa, whose music will also be performed that day.

At 20.00 the festival programme will conclude with a performance by I Vocalisti, a unique chamber chorus from northern Germany. Performing with the ensemble will be the outstanding German vocalist who specialises in polyphonic overtone (“throat”) singing – Anna-Maria Hefele. The chorus’ founder and director Hans-Joachim Lustig will be conducting (Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre).
