Famous Russian ensembles to appear at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre

On 3 December a series of performances by guest ensembles at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre opens with the Moscow Soloists chamber orchestra, established by violist and conductor Yuri Bashmet. That programme includes Ludwig van Beethoven's String Quartet No 11 (transcription by Gustav Mahler), Alfred Schnittke's Concerto for Three for violin, viola and cello and Franz Schubert's String Quartet No 14 (Der Tod und das Mädchen; transcription by Gustav Mahler). The soloists are Andrei Poskrobko (violin), Yuri Bashmet (viola) and Alexei Naidenov (cello).

Over the course of its lengthy creative career, the Moscow Soloists have toured to the most prominent venues in Russia, the USA and Europe, and its concerts have been broadcast and recorded on numerous occasions by radio stations including the BBC, Radio France and NHK. The Moscow Soloists' repertoire includes over three hundred and fifty familiar classical and rarely-performed works as well as music by contemporary composers. In 2007, to mark its fifteenth anniversary, the ensemble undertook a tour of Russia, during which it presented forty-two concerts in thirty-nine cities, and to mark its twentieth anniversary it gave over eighty concerts in thirty countries. Their appearance at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre is part of an extensive programme celebrating twenty-five years of the Moscow Soloists.

On 11 December the symphony orchestra Symphonica ARTica of the State Krivoshapko Philharmonic of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) conducted by Fabio Mastrangelo will present a programme of works by Edward Elgar (Symphony No 1) and Johannes Brahms (Piano Concerto No 2) at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre. The soloist is Rem Urasin. The concert marks three hundred and eighty-five years since Yakutia was incorporated into the Russian State. The symphony orchestra Symphonica ARTica was founded in 2012. In the five years since it was established the orchestra has taken part in several international projects and toured to major venues in Russia. Symphonica ARTica's concerts have twice taken place as part of the Moscow Easter Festival (2014 and 2015).

On 28 December the musicAeterna orchestra will be making its debut at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre under its founder and Artistic Director Teodor Currentzis. The famed ensemble will be performing Dmitry Shostakovich's Seventh Symphony (Leningrad).

Established in 2004, today the orchestra musicAeterna is one of the most popular ensembles in terms of authentic music performance. Its tours have taken the musicians to Vienna, Amsterdam, London, Baden-Baden, Madrid, Athens, Berlin, Munich, Mannheim, Dortmund, Lisbon, Paris, Helsinki, Brussels, Salzburg, Moscow and St Petersburg. The ensemble's recordings, released on the Sony Classical label, receive prestigious music prizes and awards on an annual basis.

On 7 January 2018 the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre will host the second concert in the subscription of the State Borodin Quartet. Founded in 1945, the ensemble, despite the changing musicians, retains its own style and reputation as an outstanding orchestra. The Quartet's biography numbers thousands of appearances throughout the world, the organisation of festivals, the establishment of the first Russian quartet competition and numerous recordings with companies such as EMI, BMG, Onyx and ICA Classics. A particular chapter in the history of the Borodin Quartet has been its collaboration with Dmitry Shostakovich, which lasted more than thirty years. From the very beginning of its creativity up to the last year of the composer's life, the musicians worked closely with Shostakovich, performing his quartets, producing recordings and appearing together. The programme for the concert on 7 January includes both Ludwig van Beethoven and Dmitry Shostakovich's Fifteenth Quartets.
