On 30 September (15.00) and 29 October (12.00) at the historic Mariinsky Theatre soloists of the Mariinsky Academy of Young Opera Singers directed by Larisa Gergieva will present a premiere of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera Der Schauspieldirektor. The stage director and set designer is Gleb Cherepanov, for whom this will be his third collaboration with the Mariinsky Theatre following L'Histoire du soldat and Diary of a Madman. Anton Gakkel will be conducting.
The comic opera Der Schauspieldirektor, which portrays the backstage life of performers, was composed in 1786, when the Austrian Emperor Joseph II organised a music competition, commissioning one-act operas on backstage plots from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri. 18th century audiences preferred Salieri's opus, but the judgement of history has awarded Mozart the victory, and today his singspiel is frequently performed on the stage.
The first opera premiere of the Mariinsky Theatre's 2017-18 season is targeted at young audiences. The short duration, virtuoso arias bordering on vocal acrobatics and vivid plot-line of intrigue make it easier to understand a work in the opera genre, making the production a winning choice as an introduction to musical theatre.
