Yaroslavna. The Eclipse Ballet Premiere at the XXV Stars of the White Nights Festival

Boris Tishchenko's ballet Yaroslavna. The Eclipse (choreography by Vladimir Varnava) premieres on June 30, at 18.00, as part of the XXV Stars of the White Nights festival at the Mariinsky II. The performance will be conducted by Valery Gergiev.

Boris Tishchenko wrote the ballet Yaroslavna for the Academic Maly Opera and Ballet Theatre in Leningrad (now known as the Mikhailovsky Theatre). The production choreographed by Oleg Vinogradov and directed by Yuri Lyubimov premiered on June 30, 1974 and was one of the ballet highlights of the 1970s. The production ran at the theatre for 14 years and was performed more than 120 times.

Vladimir Varnava, one of the most popular young choreographers in Russia, is to present a new interpretation of Boris Tishchenko's masterpiece at the Mariinsky Theatre. Yaroslavna. The Eclipse marks his first full-fledged production commissioned by the Mariinsky Theatre. He has previously captivated the Saint Petersburg public with his choreographic miniatures for the Creative Workshop of Young Choreographers at the Mariinsky Theatre, presented as part of the International Ballet Festival Mariinsky. Varnava developed his unique movement language together with the performers of the new production. “It has become something of a habit of mine to create the choreography together with the dancers, to make changes on-the-go. I have found the soloists I am in tune with. Together, we try to get to the essence of each role and to shape it accordingly. Creating purely dancing sequences for such a production is of no interest to me. When there is a story, it is interesting to work out a production’s structure and its core language, not only its decorative elements. I work with modern art and thus am convinced that it should remain relevant and resonate with the modern public. While reading The Tale of Igor's Campaign, I tried to draw parallels with myself and look for those emotions and images that would appeal to a modern theatre-goer”, Vladimir Varnana said. The production’s team also includes Konstantin Fyodorov (script), Galya Solodovnikova (costume and set design), Igor Fomin (lighting design), Ilya Starilov (video graphics design).

The performers include Zlata Yalinich, Nadezhda Batoeva, Daria Pavlenko, Kristina Shapran (Yaroslavna); Yuri Smekalov, Roman Belyakov, Andrei Yermakov, Alexander Sergeev (Prince Igor); David Zaleyev, Grigory Popov, Vasily Tkachenko (Div).

The first performances are also scheduled for July 1(20.00) and July 2 (12.00 and 17.30) at the Mariinsky II.
