Over the years the orchestra has been conducted by Gunnar Knudsen, Karsten Andersen, Bjørn Voll, Alexander Dmitriev, Ole Kristian Ruud, Susanna Mälkki and Steven Sloane. Since 2013 its Principal Conductor has been Christian Vásquez (Venezuela). For the past twenty-five years the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra has dedicated particular attention to the practice of authentic performance of baroque and classical music, working with Philippe Herreweghe and Fabio Biondi. Over the course of its artistic history, the ensemble has released over forty recordings, several of which have received prestigious prizes and awards including a Diapason, L’Orphées d’Or and the Spellemann Award, while in 2016 the orchestra established its own label SSO Recordings. Today the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra frequently tours to the USA, Spain, Germany, Japan and other Scandinavian countries.

The concert by the Norwegian ensemble forms part of the subscription series Guest Orchestras: West and East which concludes on 11 May with a performance by the Karelian State Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra under Anatoly Rybalko at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre. The concert programme includes Sergei Taneyev's Symphony No 4 in C minor and Sergei Prokofiev's Sinfonia concertante for cello in E minor. Soloist – Boris Andrianov (cello).
