A Grand Concert marking Chinese New Year at the Mariinsky Theatre

On 25 January at 19:00 at the historic Mariinsky Theatre there will be a Grand Concert marking Chinese New Year. The programme The Silk Road and Fuchun Mountain Capriccio will be presented by prize-winners of the China National Arts Foundation Award, the Chinese Orchestra of the TV and Radio Company of Shaanxi Province and the Orchestra of Traditional Instruments of Zhejiang Province as well as soloists performing early Chinese instruments – Fan Cong (guanzi) and Lu Tingting (erhu). Conductor: Zhang Lie.

The concert programme includes two movements (II and IV) from the fantasy-suite The Silk Road, Old Locust Trees Search for Their Roots and Love from Qiao's Grand Courtyard Suite by Zhao Jiping, Listening to the Wind from the capriccio Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains and The Silk Road by Jiang Ying, Journey to the West from the cycle Dreams of the Silk Road by Zhang Xiaofeng, Seeking Dao in the Autumn Mountains from the capriccio Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains, The Legend of Shadi-Er by Liu Yuan and the folk melody The General's Order (arranged by Gu Guanzhenya).

In 2017 the project A Grand Concert Marking Chinese New Year celebrates its twentieth anniversary. The first concert took place in 1998 at the Goldener Saal of Vienna's Musikverein and has run throughout the world on an annual basis ever since.
