The Mariinsky Theatre is saddened to announce the unexpected death on 14 January at the age of thirty-eight of bass-baritone Edward Nikolaevich Tsanga, Mariinsky Opera soloist and Honoured Artist of the Republic of Komi.
A prize-winner and diploma-recipient at numerous music competitions including Plácido Domingo's international competition Operalia and the Elena Obraztsova International Competition, Edward Tsanga studied music at the Nizhny-Novgorod State Glinka Conservatoire (class of Professor Sedov). In 2000 he was invited to join the Mariinsky Academy of Young Opera Singers directed by Larisa Gergieva, and in 2008 he joined the Mariinsky Opera.
The singer's repertoire included over thirty major roles, and he featured in world premieres of Rodion Shchedrin's opuses The Lefthander and A Christmas Tale.
Together with the Mariinsky Opera, Edward Tsanga toured to London, Paris and cities in Finland, South Korea, Japan and Germany. He performed the role of Leandro in a production of Prokofiev's opera The Love for Three Oranges at the Teatro Real (Madrid) as well as in Aix-en-Provence (France) and Luxembourg.
The Mariinsky Theatre sends its deepest sympathies to Edward Tsanga's family and friends. We mourn together with you all.
On 30 January there will be a concert in memory of the singer at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre.
On 18 January we bid farewell to the performer. The civil funeral begins at 10:00 in the Dress Circle Foyer of the Mariinsky Theatre (historic building). The funeral service will take place at 13:00 at St Nicholas' Naval Cathedral (1/3 Nikolskaya Sq). The burial ceremony will take place after the funeral service, at Volkovo Cemetery (3 Rasstanny Proezd).
