On 13 January at the Concert Hall soloists of the Mariinsky Opera and the Academy of Young Opera Singers will present Georges Bizet's opera Les Pêcheurs de perles (in concert). The evening opens the subscription French Romantics.
The lead roles will be performed by Dmitry Voropaev (Nadir), Yaroslav Petryanik (Zurga), Olga Pudova (Leïla) and Pavel Shmulevich (Nourabad). The Mariinsky Orchestra will be conducted by Mikhail Sinkevich.
"We are presenting a new subscription which features popular titles as well as rarely performed works. The opera that opens the subscription is popular throughout the world, and many opera houses have it in their repertoires. In addition to its beauty, refinement and passions, it is attractive for vocalists through its incredible ease of performance," said Larisa Gergieva, Artistic Director of the Mariinsky Academy of Young Opera Singers.
The premiere of Georges Bizet's opera Les Pêcheurs de perles took place in 1863 in Paris and met with a cool reception from the critics. Following the composer's death there came productions at theatres in Europe, America and Russia. Recent production premieres include versions at the Metropolitan Opera, English National Opera, the Tatar Academic Musa Cälil Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Moscow Kolobov New Opera Theatre and the St Petersburg Chamber Opera Company. Highlights of Les Pêcheurs de perles are also frequently included in concert programmes.
The French Romantics subscription also includes the operas Cendrillon by Jules Massenet (11 February) and Le Roi d'Ys by Édouard Lalo (13 May).
