On 22, 23 and 25 December as part of the XI International Piano Festival at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre Daniil Trifonov and the Mariinsky Orchestra under Valery Gergiev will perform all of Sergei Rachmaninoff's piano concerti.
The programme for the evening on 22 December includes the First and Fourth Piano Concerti (20.00). On 23 December there will be a performance of the Second Piano Concerto and Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini (20.00). On 25 December the performance will include Symphonic Dances and the Third Piano Concerto (13.00).
Winner of the XIV International Tchaikovsky Competition Daniil Trifonov is one of the greatest pianists of his generation. Orchestras with which the musician collaborates include the greatest ensembles of the world, and future performances in coming years will take him to major venues in Europe, America and Asia. In the 2016-17 season works by Sergei Rachmaninoff are widely represented in Daniil Trifonov's repertoire. Immediately after the festival, in St Petersburg the pianist will appear in a series of concerts with the Berliner Philharmoniker, to which he has been invited to be the soloist in the Third Piano Concerto. In February 2017 he will perform the Fourth Concerto with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and then he will be appearing in concerts with the Mariinsky Orchestra and the Münchner Philharmoniker under Valery Gergiev in Germany. Sergei Rachmaninoff's piano concerti will also be performed by Daniil Trifonov in Australia with the Sydney and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras.
In August 2015 Daniil Trifonov and Deutsche Grammophon released a disc of variations by Sergei Rachmaninoff with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Yannick Nézet-Séguin which received rave reviews and was nominated for a Grammy award.
Recent projects of the Mariinsky Theatre and Valery Gergiev have been dedicated to the music of Sergei Rachmaninoff. In December 2015 works by the composer comprised the programme of the VIII music festival To Mstislav Rostropovich, while in February 2016 in Vladivostok and Khabarovsk the Rachmaninoff Festival took place. During the two-day piano marathon in both cities there were performances of all of Sergei Rachmaninoff's piano concerti and the Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini by prize-winners of the International Tchaikovsky Competition as well as participants of the Mariinsky International Piano Festival.
