From 21 to 27 December in Baden-Baden (Germany) there will be the now traditional Christmas and pre-New Year performances by the Mariinsky Ballet and Orchestra. At the Festspielhaus, one of Europe's largest theatre and concert complexes, there will be dazzling productions featuring both classical and contemporary choreography with Mariinsky Theatre principals and leading soloists.
The tour programme opens with an evening of ballets by Michel Fokine. Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's Schéhérazade will be presented to German audiences by Diana Vishneva and Konstantin Zverev, Chopiniana to music by Frédéric Chopin will be performed by Yekaterina Osmolkina, Xenia Ostreikovskaya, Yana Selina and Maxim Zyuzin and Igor Stravinsky's The Firebird will be danced by Yekaterina Ivannikova and Alexander Romanchikov. Valery Gergiev will be conducting the Mariinsky Orchestra.
The performances will continue with Pyotr Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake and Adolphe Adam's Giselle. Audiences will see Swan Lake with Viktoria Tereshkina and Xander Parish (23 December) and Ekaterina Kondaurova and Danila Korsuntsev (25 December) in the lead roles. The playbill for Giselle features the names of Oxana Skorik and Filipp Stepin (22 December), Yekaterina Osmolkina and Maxim Zyuzin (26 December, 14.00) and Viktoria Tereshkina and Xander Parish (26 December, 19.00).
On 27 December the tour of the Mariinsky Ballet and Orchestra to Baden-Baden concludes with a Gala Concert. The programme for the evening includes one-act ballets, highlights of classical choreography and contemporary productions. Diana Vishneva, Danila Korsuntsev and Konstantin Zverev will present Alberto Alonso's production of the one-act ballet Carmen-Suite to music by Georges Bizet – Rodion Shchedrin, Ekaterina Kondaurova and Xander Parish will appear in the lead roles in Frederick Ashton's ballet Marguerite and Armand to music by Franz Liszt, Oxana Skorik and Filipp Stepin will perform the Grand Pas Classique to music by Daniel Auber (choreography by Victor Gsovsky) and Nadezhda Batoeva and Ernest Latypov will appear in the Pas de deux from Pyotr Tchaikovsky's ballet The Nutcracker. 21st century choreography will be represented by Vladimir Varnava's ballet Clay to music by Darius Milhaud. The Mariinsky Orchestra will be conducted by Alexei Repnikov (from 22 to 27 December).
