Valery Gergiev to open the State Philharmonic of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania

On 17 December at 18:00 in Vladikavkaz there will be a grand opening ceremony of the State Philharmonic of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania – following major reconstruction work, the restored venue will host the Mariinsky Orchestra under Valery Gergiev. The programme will be announced later.

The building of the State Philharmonic of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania is a former Lutheran church, and this year marks one hundred and fifty years since the unique historic monument was built. The Philharmonic – the only example of late Gothic architecture in the south of Russia – adorns the historic heart of Vladikavkaz.

Major work to reconstruct the building began in October 2015 on the initiative of Tamerlan Aguzarov, leader of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania who died young. In the spring of 2016 this continued under the republic's new leadership headed by Vyacheslav Bitarov. A great deal of support in the restoration of the Philharmonic was provided by Valery Gergiev, Artistic and General Director of the Mariinsky Theatre.

In a short space of time the building's façade has been restored, retaining its historic appearance including the design of the wooden window frames and stained glass, as well as the reconstruction of the interiors: the stage has been enlarged and the acoustics of the concert hall have been significantly improved. The technical recommendations regarding changing the proscenium and increasing the height of the auditorium to improve its qualities were developed by the internationally acclaimed acoustic design engineer Yasuhisa Toyota.

Work to restore the State Philharmonic of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania will be completed in spring next year, and a new organ will be installed in the concert hall.
