Prize-winners of the TONALi competition to appear in the chamber halls of the Mariinsky II

On 24 November at the Musorgsky Hall (Mariinsky II) there will be an appearance by TONALi competition prize-winner Mayumi Kanagawa (vioin). The programme includes works by Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber, Alfred Schnittke, Sergei Prokofiev, Johann Sebastian Bach and Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst. This concert opens the subscription Sounds of Change – TONALi Music Hour.

Recipient of the 1st prizes at the Jascha Heifetz International Violin Competition in Vilnius and at the Irving Klein International Youth Competition in San Francisco, Mayumi Kanagawa is a student at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin (class of Kolja Blacher). Performs a violin crafted by Pietro Guarnieri (Mantua, late 17th century), presented by the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben.

The series of concerts by prize-winners of the TONALi competition over the 2016-17 season at the Musorgsky Hall also features cellist Christoph Heesch (15 December) and pianist Elisabeth Brauss and cellist Friedrich Thiele (26 January) as well as, at the Prokofiev Hall, pianist Hanni Liang (23 February).

Collaboration between the Mariinsky Theatre and the German cultural and educational project TONALi began several years ago. In the 2015-16 season in addition to a series of concerts in the chamber halls of the Mariinsky-II there came the project Sounds of Change, which combined performances by musicians of the next generation with work to attract younger audiences to concert halls. As part of the subscription Sounds of Change – TONALi Music Hour performers not only demonstrate their brilliant understanding of their instruments but also engage with the audience. In addition to concerts at the Mariinsky Theatre, the musicians will appear at schools in St Petersburg where their performances are being organised and run by Year 6 – 10 pupils (one group for each soloist). In advance, young "arts managers" will receive the necessary basic skills at a seminar at the Mariinsky Theatre.
